Special Olympics hoops program set to kick off

ANDOVER — The Andover Golden Eagles Basketball Program will begin its second season on Nov. 18.

The goal of the program is to bring together Special Olympic athletes and volunteers to build friendship, character and inspire all participants. Last year, three teams took part in the Winter Special Olympics.

Participants must be between the ages of 8 and 21. The program is held in the Doherty Middle School gymnasium on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 7:45. Registration takes place on the first night, so participants are asked to arrive earlier.

The program is free, but donations are welcome.

To participate, volunteer or make donations to the team, please contact Abby Martin at eagleolympics@comcast.net.

Recycle your old electronics on Saturday

METHUEN — Need to get rid of old electronics? The city is sponsoring an electronics recycling event this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the transfer station on Huntington Avenue.

The event will be run by ACT Inc. Residents and businesses may dispose of computers, monitors, fax machines and other electronics for free.

"This is a win for the environment and for citizens who can save significant disposal fees," Mayor William Manzi said in a statement.

This is part of a series of the Manzi administration's efforts to promote green government and energy efficiency.

In 2006, Manzi created a committee to advise him on such matters. Earlier this year, he distributed reusable cloth shopping bags at his annual city cleanup event. He also entered the city in the EPA's Energy Challenge, committing to lower the city's energy consumption by 10 percent by the end of his tenure as mayor. He is currently working to employ renewable energy sources such as solar and wind to power city lighting systems, the statement said.

Health Information and Technology Week begins

LAWRENCE — Health information management and technology work to help health care professionals make important, and sometimes life-saving, decisions on a real-time basis. However, because timely communication and accessibility of health information are key elements in a patient's proper treatment and care, frequent change is always important to health care information systems.¬

Greater Lawrence Family Health Center is joining the American Health Information Management Association's 19th annual Health Information and Technology Week, which starts today and runs to Saturday. The theme of this year's event is "The Strength of Technology, The Power of Care."

GLFHC provides primary health care to 42,000 patients from Lawrence and the neighboring communities of Haverhill, Andover, North Andover, Methuen, Tewksbury and Salem, N.H. GLFHC runs four neighborhood clinics in Lawrence, two school-based health centers, and the only federally funded Health Care for the Homeless program in the Merrimack Valley.
