HAVERHILL — Early morning voter turnout in Haverhill was particularly strong at some of Haverhill's polling locations, including Ward 2 Precinct 2 at the Hunking Middle School where Warden Jim Macdonald counted 145 votes cast by 10:30 a.m.
"This is as much as we had for the whole preliminary election," Macdonald said, referring to Sept. 15 election when only 12-percent of registered voters went to the polls in Haverhill. "It's been very steady."
Just down the hall at Ward 7, Precinct 2, Warden Gary Bradley had counted 100 votes cast by 10:30 a.m.
"It's much busier than the primary," Bradley said.
The Citizens Center, Ward 3, Precinct 1, saw a moderate but healthy flow of voters with Warden Elinor Curtin Cameron counting 39 votes cast by 9 a.m.
"I think it's going to be much heavier than we anticipated," Curtin Cameron said. "It's been steady and heavy, in contrast to the preliminary election."
At the public library, Ward 3, Precinct 2, Warden Herb Bergh was experiencing a steady flow of voters as well and had counted 81 votes cast by 9:30 a.m.
"Our voters tend to wander in and out all day and we usually get a flurry after lunch and then late afternoon," Bergh said. "So far it's slightly ahead of the preliminary but it's still too early to tell."
The Second Baptist Church on Amesbury Line Road, Ward 4, Precinct 2, was a hot bed of activity with 100 votes cast there by 8 a.m. and another 100 by 9:30 a.m.
"We have a very active precinct," said Warden Ron Sarofian.
City Councilors William Macek and David Hall stationed themselves in front of the church and watched a steady flow of cars coming and going.
"This is probably double or triple the preliminary," Macek said. "Without question this is a very good turnout. The weather is right and that's part of it."
