LAWRENCE — A man was knocked unconscious after he was attacked by three others at Bunkerhill and Park streets early Sunday morning, police said.
Officers were sent to 9 Bunkerhill St. for a report of a fight in the street about 3:38 a.m. But when they arrived, there was no fight and witnesses told them the people who were fighting had already left.
While there the officers could see four men up the street arguing and one of them was surrounded by the other three and struck in the back of the head, knocking him to the ground and the three men continued to kick and beat the fallen man.
Officers Angel Lopez and Michael Colantuoni ran up the street toward the fight and the three men ran away.
The officers ran after the men south on Lawrence Street toward Lexington Street.
The men ignored police commands to stop and the jumped into a green Acura and fled.
One of the men threw a baseball bat into the truck before they drove off.
Lopez was able to get the plate number and police learned the car is registered to a Methuen man.
Officers Ivan Melendez and Ariskelda Ruffen stayed with the victim to render aid while waiting for the arrival of the ambulance. The victim was knocked unconscious and when he came to he was asked if he knew his attackers.
"Don't worry about it," the victim told police, "I'll take care of it."
The victim was taken to Lawrence General Hospital for treatment of lacerations to the left side and right rear of his head and under his right eye.
The investigation is continuing, police said.
