ANDOVER — An Andover man died in a car accident on Interstate 495 north in Littleton yesterday afternoon, state police said.

William Pfeil, 25, drove a 2009 Kia Rio in the breakdown lane when he lost control near Exit 31 around 2:45 p.m.

Pfeil's vehicle struck a message board on the right shoulder of the road and rolled over before striking the guardrail adjacent to the breakdown lane, state police said in a press release.

Pfeil, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. Rescue crews transported him by medical helicopter to Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, where he succumbed to his injuries, a press release said.

State police are investigating the single-car crash.

Police closed all the lanes of the highway for approximately 45 minutes to accommodate the medical helicopter's landing. The right and middle lanes of I-495 north were closed for about an hour longer for the crash investigation, the press release said.

There was another fatal accident on I-495 north around 3:30 p.m. in Foxborough when a 75-year-old man from Hamden, Conn., driving a 2007 Toyota Avalon lost control and rolled over in the median, fatally injuring his passenger, a 69-year-old woman also from Hamden, Conn. The driver was seriously injured and transported to Rhode Island Hospital, state police said in a press release.

The left lanes of I-495 north and south were closed there for about two hours for the crash investigation and vehicle removal, the press release said.
