LAWRENCE — A single food drive can help keep pantry shelves stocked for months.
Next week, donating non-perishable goods to the Lawrencians Giving Thanks food drive will also honor the memory of well-known Irishman David Burke, who started the drive in 2001 to help needy families at holiday time.
Now in its eighth year, the food drive kicks off Nov. 19. Drop-offs will be at City Hall, the Senior Center and Lawrence Public Library. Items being acceptable are boxed pasta, rice, canned goods and cereal.
Well-wishers may also choose to make a $15 donation to Colony Foods, who will in turn donate a turkey to the cause, Mayor Michael Sullivan said.
All food and turkeys will be delivered to Lazarus House, Daybreak Shelter, Bread and Roses, Neighbors in Need, Cor Unum and the Salvation Army.
A ceremony will officially kick off the annual drive on Nov. 19. It will be at 10 a.m. at City Hall in the first floor lobby.
Burke served as a volunteer in Sullivan's office for many years and organized the city's annual St. Patrick's Day luncheon.
Burke, who died in May from complications of cancer, was a highly decorated and respected member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, an Irish group that promotes friendship, unity and true Christian charity. He was also widely known for his efforts to promote peace in Ireland.
