LAWRENCE — The Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union has continued its support of the YMCA's annual Reach Out for Youth and Families' with a $10,000 donation to the campaign.
The donation will provide needed financial assistance to families so they may participate in YMCA's programming, including after-school child care, sports teams, camping programs and other health and wellness activities.
"We are proud of our partnership with the Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union," said Stephen Ives, Merrimack Valley YMCA president and CEO. " Thanks to their support we are able to be there for children and families when they need us most. Our staff team truly appreciates the effort put in by credit union employees to raise these dollars on our behalf, and we look forward to putting these funds to work to deliver much needed programs and services."
In addition, the credit union announced it will expand its support in 2009 with the formal sponsorship of the Teen Leadership Programs, a popular curriculum focused on academic achievement, leadership development and the improvement of social skills in teens.
"We are excited to be supporting the teen programs in 2009. We've been an advocate and supporter of the Y for several years now, but not with a direct impact on one particular program," said Peter Matthews, president and CEO of the credit union.
Tire dump site to be cleaned
METHUEN — Volunteers will be cleaning the illegal dumping site at the end of Cambridge Street on Saturday.
Residents have removed some 200 tires from a swamp near the lot and now need help to move the tires to the road for disposal.
The cleanup will be from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Twenty-five people have signed up, but more hands are needed. "The more the better. Get done faster," said area resident John Bruno.
The city will have a crew take the tires from Cambridge Street to the transfer station for free, said Matthew Kraunelis, the mayor's chief of staff.
Helpers will also remove trash, Bruno said. People are asked to bring gloves, rakes, shovels etc., and advised to wear boots and dressing warmly.
Winter parking ban is in effect
ANDOVER — The winter overnight parking ban began this week and will remain in effect until March 31.
The parking ban is being enforced on all public roads and parking lots between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Vehicles parked for longer than one hour on roads and in public lots during those hours will ticketed. Vehicles interfering with snow and ice removal, regardless of the time of day, may be towed at the owner's expense too.
