The open house will be at Bulfinch Hall, 11 Salem St. Jane Fried, dean of admission, will discuss the academy educational experience, co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, and the admission process. Superintendent Whitten receiving award METHUEN — Jeanne Whitten, the superintendent of the city's school district, will receive some kudos from people involved with the University of Massachusetts Lowell next month. Whitten received her doctorate of education from the university. The Independent University Alumni Association at Lowell (formerly UMass Lowell Alumni Association) will present Whitten with the Distinguished Alumni Award on Jan. 28 at the Princeton Station in Chelmsford. Founded in October 1947, the alumni association is celebrating its 62nd anniversary. Since 1978, the association has annually recognized an alumnus worthy of receiving recognition for an inspirational career, for contribution to the community at large and to the general reputation of the alumni. Whitten received her undergraduate degree from Salem State College and her master's degree from Boston State College (now University of Massachusetts Boston). She has been the Methuen superintendent since 2006. Cardinal O'Malley scholarship established NORTH ANDOVER — Cardinal Sean O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston, received a proclamation during a recent luncheon at Merrimack College establishing two full scholarships in his name. The scholarships will be awarded to graduates of the Blessed Stephen Bellesini Academy. Merrimack College sponsors the middle school for boys in Lawrence, who come from limited financial means. Many of the graduates go on to attend private high school, and the scholarship will now give them a chance to attend college. Attending the luncheon were Ronald Champagne, president of Merrimack College; Larry Demers, chairman of the college's board of trustees; the Rev. Donald Reilly, prior provincial of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova; the Rev. William Garland, of the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova; the reverends Joseph Calderone, Joseph Farrell and Brother Robert Thornton of Villanova University; and the reverends James Wenzel, Ray Dlugos and Bill Waters of Merrimack College. Spend New Year's Eve at the Senior Center METHUEN — The Senior Activity Center will have a New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance. The BYOB event begins at 6:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve. There will be dinner, wine, dancing and music by The Entertainers. Tickets cost $50 and are available at the center at 77 Lowell St. The public is invited and space is limited.
