Sat, May 17 2008 Mayor James Fiorentini will host a coffee hour with residents Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m. at Burke's Blast from the Past 50's Diner, 558 River St. Neighbors and constituents are invited to have coffee and discuss neighborhood issues in Haverhill. Women's City Club to meet The Women's City Club of Haverhill will meet April 1 in the fellowship hall of First Congregational Church, 322 Main St. Coffee hour begins at 1:30 p.m., followed by a business meeting at 2. A program of entertainment follows and features impressionist Mark Verselli. The Drifters to perform The city's Council on Aging is planning a May 13 trip to Luciano's on Lake Pearl in Wrentham to see a performance by The Drifters. Charlie Thomas' Drifters perform throughout the world and showcase some of the greatest hits of the 1950s and 1960s, such as "Under the Boardwalk" and "Save the Last Dance for Me." Cost of the trip is $64 per person and includes a choice of stuffed breast of chicken or baked haddock. Deaf performing artist to appear at college Deaf performing artist Peter Cook will appear at Northern Essex Community College on April 5. Cook will present a three-hour afternoon workshop titled "Creativity and ASL (American Sign Language)" beginning at 1 p.m. An evening show begins at 7 and is appropriate for children ages 10 and older. Both events are open to the public and will be in the college's Technology Center, 100 Elliott St. Cook's work incorporates American Sign Language, pantomime, storytelling, acting and movement. He has traveled around the country to promote ASL literature since 1986. A professor at Columbia College in Chicago, Cook has appeared on television and on stages around the world. In the workshop, Cook will encourage participants to explore their creativity through American Sign Language literature. He also will lecture on the relationship between deaf culture and literature and demonstrate the technical aspects of ASL storytelling and poetry. This event is offered for 0.3 CEUs or ACET credits for the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf in the content area of professional studies and has an instruction level of extensive. Cost is $50 for the workshop and $20 for full-time students with identification. Show prices are $5 for children ages 10 to 12, $8 for youths ages 13 to 18 and full-time college students, and $15 for adults. Workshop and performance combination prices are $60 for adults and $25 for full-time college students or people over 65. Spoken English interpretation will be provided at both events. This event is sponsored by the college's deaf studies department, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services, and the Gallaudet University Regional Center at the college. College seeks basketball players Northern Essex Community College's 2008 summer basketball league for girls is accepting applications for enrollment for its 38th season, which will be June 16 to July 21. This is a competitive basketball league for high school and middle school players. Games are Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., and are indoors at the Sport and Fitness Center on the Haverhill campus. Teams are scheduled for a minimum of nine regular season games. The top four teams in the division make the playoffs. All roster players will receive a Northern Essex summer league game shirt. There will be a 15-player-per-team limit with a minimum of 10.
