Police offer free summer camp in Haverhill

Applications for the Haverhill Police Department's GREAT/DARE Days summer camp will be available starting Monday and can be picked up in the front lobby of the police station, 40 Bailey Blvd.

Applications must be turned in no later than June 9.

This camp is free to Haverhill children ages 7 to 12. Camp runs from June 23 through Aug. 21 and consists of scheduled recreational activities, guest speakers and field trips. Activities include spider web, soccer, hoop relay, dodge ball, impulse and moonball. Field trips are to Canobie Lake Park, Fisher Cats baseball, York Animal Kingdom, Southwick Zoo and the Boston Science Museum.

A special emphasis will be placed on building self-esteem, cooperation and communication based on activities and philosophies developed through the DARE program and Project Adventure.

Police officers have been trained in this trust-building group program and will offer healthy alternatives to drug abuse and violence. Due to the popularity of this program, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The camp will be at Pentucket Lake Elementary School, 252 Concord St., Monday and Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and Silver Hill Elementary School, 675 Washington St., Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Snacks, beverages, and lunch will be provided at no cost.

More information and details regarding the camp are available with the application form. More information is available from DARE Officer Bill Alvarado at 978-373-1212, ext. 569. All applicants may attend both camps sites as long as they have transportation.
