Teen collecting shoes for Iraqi children

Christopher Powers, 17, a senior and member of the National Honor Society at Haverhill High School, is putting out a call for shoes to send to needy children in Iraq. He's already collected more than 75 pairs through a recent Student Council shoe drive. His mother, Liz Powers, said the shoes her son collects will be picked up by students from Dartmouth College. Through the college's Iraqi Shoe Project, all donated shoes will be shipped to Iraq at no cost to Powers. Last year, Powers collected 200 pairs of shoes for the Iraqi Shoe Project.

To donate shoes, drop them off in the front office at Haverhill High or contact Christopher Powers at 978-994-9716. Please call any weekday after 2:30 p.m.

Whittier Voc-Tech inducted record number into honor society

Exceptional students at Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School were honored at the school's Awards Night 2008 "Commitment to Excellence" before a packed house on May 12 in the Whittier auditorium.

In a candle-lit ceremony, 33 students were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society in recognition of their citizenship, leadership, scholarship and workmanship. That is the highest number of Whittier students ever inducted in one year. Students must earn a 3.5 G.P.A. and receive teacher recommendations to be inducted
