Visiting students need homes A group of 40 students plus two escorts from Pamplona, Spain, will arrive in the Merrimack Valley this Saturday. A dozen of those students are looking for local families to live with for 28 days. Participating families are asked to provide these students with a place to sleep and dinner most days. Students range in age from 16 to 17 and are all juniors in high school. The students earned scholarships from their department of education to come here. This is a nonprofit organization that has been bringing foreign students to the Haverhill area since 2002. The visiting students will be taken on field trips while they are here, and host families are welcome to join the group on its trips. Free gas giveaway Gas prices are up and it's something the folks at Northeast Community Credit Union are well aware of. So, to directly assist drivers in Greater Haverhill, the credit union will award a total of $1,750 in prizes to three lucky people. The top winner will drive away with $1,000 in gas cash. Cell phones are available for seniors and can be used to dial 911. The Council on Aging wants to help you avoid problems during emergency situations through the use of ICE (In Case of Emergency). To ICE your phone all you need to do is enter emergency contact information into your cell phone. Trip to the races The city's Council on Aging is planning a trip to the Saratoga Races, Aug. 17 to 19. Trip includes a Saratoga Springs tour, reserved grandstand seating at the track, visits to the Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, and the Saratoga Gaming and Race Way. The trip includes round-trip motor coach transportation, two nights at the Courtyard Marriott in Saratoga Springs, four complete meals (two breakfasts and two dinners), and all admissions. Price is $495 double occupancy, $485 triple occupancy and $625 single occupancy. Deposit of $25 is due at sign-up. The balance due by July 18. A $30 waiver fee is available. Mohegan Sun Casino trip offered The city's Council on Aging is planning a trip to the Garde Arts Theatre and Mohegan Sun Casino on Sept. 11 for a performance by The Diamonds. Their show features performances of popular '50s favorites like "Little Darlin" and "The Stroll." Motor coach transportation will depart from Westgate Plaza at approximately 7 a.m. Seating will be assigned in order of payments received by Best of Times. Tickets are $67 each and include the show and a gambling package at Mohegan Sun Casino. Pastfinders Summer Camp is back The Buttonwoods Museum/Haverhill Historical Society will host its 18th annual Past Finders Summer Camp, a day camp for children in grades one through seven, beginning July 7. This year's programs include: Gadgets and Contraptions, Digging into Archaeology, Young Americans, Act Like a Lady and Come Sail Away. The program encourages children to appreciate history through hands-on activities, creative arts projects, games and appreciation of the museum's collection. Camp will run for five weekly sessions. Each session meets weekdays with morning drop-off at 9 a.m. and pick-up at 4 p.m. Although each session is different, field trips, art projects, games and cooking are an integral part of the weekly activities.
