Giant shoes to debut Friday

HAVERHILL — One of the giant Soles of Haverhill shoes, titled "A Weitzman Family Affair," was designed by celebrity shoe designer Stuart Weitzman and his family.

The shoe was embellished on Wednesday at the Hamel Mill Lofts on Locust Street. Maine crafts expert Mica Drummond, her daughter Emily, and local artist Elizabeth Persing added Swarovski crystal, emerald, sapphire and ruby rhinestones to the shoe.

The Soles of Haverhill "Shoe-la-bration" will unveil 13 giant shoes at the city's July 4 celebration on Friday evening at Haverhill Stadium. The shoes will be auctioned off this fall with proceeds going to local non profits, as well as to public and local art programs. Weitzman has ties to Haverhill. His father, Seymour Weitzman, operated a shoe factory on Essex Street until his death in 1965.
