HAVERHILL — Two men, one of them showing a gun, attempted to rob the Cumberland Farms at 323 Main St., Wednesday night, but ran off when more customers entered, police said.

The men entered the store about 10:20 p.m.

One of the men pulled a gun and demanded money from the cashier, but ran out of the store when two people entered, Deputy police Chief Donald Thompson said yesterday.

"It's possible they were spooked by the two people," Thompson said.

One of the two men was described as 6 feet tall, wearing a gray hoodie and a mask over his face. The second man was described as 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall.

Both were described as being 18 to 25 years of age, Thompson said.

The night before, a man entered the Saba Food Mart and Shell station at 154 S. Main St., about 10:58 p.m., and found the store clerk was locking up the beer coolers.

Detective Capt. Alan Ratte said the robber shoved the clerk, causing her to turn around, and stuck a black-colored handgun in her side and walked her to the cash register.

Ratte said she opened the register, the man took the money and ran out of the store.

Ratte said the man used a black hoodie to cover his face and was wearing a blue-and-white bandanna on his head, fashioned as a do-rag.

Anyone with information about the robberies may call police at 978-373-1212, Ratte said.
