Haverhill police warn of stranger in car who approached girl

HAVERHILL — Police are warning children and families in the area of Hilldale Avenue and Haverhill High School to watch out for strangers after a 15-year-old girl was approached by a man she did not know.

Sgt. John Arahovites said that on Wednesday the girl was walking home just before noon near Maurice Street when a man driving a dark blue, four-door compact sedan drove up to her. She told police the man made her feel uncomfortable, asking her her name and telling her he often sees her walking in the area.

She walked away and told her mother, who reported the incident to police.

The man was described as black, in his mid-20s, with a shaved head, thin goatee and medium build.

Arahovites asked that anyone seeing the man or people acting suspicious in the area try to get a license plate number and call the police 911 emergency line.

"If there are strangers in cars, kids should go to the nearest house and make sure they are safe," he said.
