Homemade pipe bombs discovered at Haverhill apartment Devices exploded, no one hurt, police say

By Jim Patten
Staff Writer

HAVERHILL — Someone tossed a homemade pipe bomb through the dining room window of a Haverhill Housing Authority apartment on South Warren Street, damaging a double-paned glass window and blowing a hole through the miniblinds, police said.

A second device that also appeared to have been detonated was found on the ground outside the window, police said.

The woman who lives at the apartment told police she was asleep about 1 a.m. Saturday when she was awakened by a bang.

She got out of bed and went downstairs to check it out but could not see anything out of place, she told police.

But later in the day Sunday, she was cleaning the apartment when she noticed the window had been broken. At first, she thought neighborhood children had tossed a rock at the window, but then she found a plastic tube smelling like smoke on the dining room floor and thought it could be an explosive device, she said. She then called police.

Police said the tube appears to be a homemade pipe bomb.

A child found a similar device on the ground outside her window, police said.

Both devices appeared to have been detonated, police said. They were brought to the police station, checked and placed into evidence.

The incident was reported to police at 8:06 p.m. Monday.

No other information was available from police.
