By Mike LaBella
Staff Writer

Haverhill Rocks 2008 takes place Aug. 16 and will feature recording artist Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson performing on Winnekenni Castle's outdoor stage.

This year the performances of the top eight finalists in the Battle of the Bands competition, which recently took place on Haverhill Community Television, will be topped off by the bluesy sound of Grammy Award-winning Johnson. The show kicks off with performances by Plugg, Furious George, Elyson, The Derelicts, Hysteria, Project 57, Mongrel, and the returning 2007 champions, TripMynd.

General admission tickets are $10, and are available at HaverhillRocks.com or at FYE stores. A limited number of VIP passes are available for $50 on HaverhillRocks.com. In addition to reserved parking and seating, VIP pass holders are invited to a meet-and-greet with Johnson after the show. Doors open at noon; music begins at 1 p.m. Johnson is expected to perform around 6 p.m. — after the winner of the Battle of the Bands is announced. The winning band will receive a $1,000 check, donated by Trinity EMS, and a music video recording session donated by ABE Multimedia of Haverhill.

The Haverhill Rocks committee is an all-volunteer group committed to raising the profile of Haverhill's diverse musical community. The committee is working with the city, the Winnekenni Foundation, and Haverhill Community Television to produce the event. About 1,500 people turned out for last year's concert.

NECC staff members honored

Three members of Northern Essex Community College's Computer Technology and Engineering Department were nominated for best paper in the kindergarten-to-grade-12 division at the annual conference of the American Society for Engineering Education in Pittsburgh.

Paul Chanley of Wakefield, Lori Heymans of Salem, N.H., and Michael Pelletier of Salem, Mass., co-wrote the paper which details three professional development institutes that were offered by the college to local middle school and high school teachers during the summers of 2006 and 2007. The institutes explored the engineering, technology, science, and math behind the generation of electricity by wind, water, and solar power, and were designed to make these subjects fun and accessible to students in kindergarten through grade 12.

The American Society for Engineering Education is a national, nonprofit organization of individuals and institutions committed to furthering education in engineering and engineering technology.
