Questions for the Candidates

READER'S QUESTION: Is Haverhill going to get a dog park that has been in the works for a while? (This question was submitted by reader Shirley Kern of Haverhill. )

MICHITSON: I believe so, but it needs to be fenced and self-sustaining. We should not be providing these ammenities and services without assurances that they are sustainable. It should be fee based and associated with a “dog park revolving fund.” Fees paid are delegated specifically to the maintenance of the park.

FIORENTINI: Yes, if we can raise private money to do so. I hope to have a dog park at either Winnekenni (Park) or some other location for next spring. In order to make this happen, we need to raise money privately or ask dog owners who wish to participate to make a voluntary contribution. We are working on a plan to do this.

READER'S QUESTION: Now that the Citizens Center has solar panels and Hilldale Avenue has a solar farm coming, if elected do you plan to invest further in solar and alternative energy? (This question was submitted by reader Tom Lucia of Haverhill. )

MICHITSON: Clearly renewable energy projects should be considered when there is a return on investment, in addition to environmental impact. I’ll review energy audit results on our buildings to seek new opportunities for investment. I’ll also attract renewable energy companies to locate here to provide good jobs at all skill levels.

FIORENTINI: Yes. Haverhill is a leader in solar and alternative energy. Solar is part of our comprehensive redesign of the Citizens Center. We have had energy audits done on every school and city building and are evaluating them for alternative energy. Part of our plan for the landfill is to see if we can install a solar farm there.

READER'S QUESTION: What will the next mayor do about graffiti in the city and security at the new river boardwalk behind The Tap restaurant? It is one big hangout after downtown clubs close and garbage is strewn all over the parking lot. (This question was submitted by reader Susan Tardif of Haverhill. )

MICHITSON: I’ll leverage Police Chief DeNaro’s connections to the sheriff’s graffiti unit to identify violators and apply a graffiti ordinance, so that violators are dealt with quickly, harshly and publicly. Stepped-up police patrols will enforce an ordinance to remove violators from public parks after 8 p.m. I’ll fulfill the mayor’s forgotten promise of Wednesday downtown sweeps.

FIORENTINI: I am proud that after 17 years of talk, we put in a new boardwalk and repaired the existing boardwalk on Merrimack Street. We plan on installing security cameras to watch the boardwalk. We work closely with the graffiti crew of the sheriff’s office to remove graffiti.

READER'S QUESTION: With all the focus on Essex Street and Washington Street downtown (with restaurants, lounges and condominium projects), what is your vision for reviving Merrimack Street (at the other end of downtown) with stores? (This question was submitted by reader Milton Taylor of Haverhill.)

MICHITSON: I will immediately pull together all stake holders that encompass Merrimack Street. New commercial businesses on underutilized upper floors will increase foot traffic which in turn will attract retail shops and eating establishments. We need to address Merrimack Street as a unit, find a market niche and promote the benefits.

FIORENTINI: We have over $100 million of investment in the Washington Street area. Our vision is to extend that to Merrimack Street with new zoning laws that encourage investment and remove red tape, new design standards and by extending the boardwalk to the Merrimack Street area.
