Free energy workshop at Northern Essex in Haverhill

Hoping to keep your heating costs under control this winter?

A free energy efficiency workshop will be presented Monday from 6:30 to 9 p.m., at the Northern Essex Community College Technology Center, Haverhill campus.

Michael Berry, an energy efficiency expert, will present ways to make homes and businesses more efficient using the latest methods.

Local home improvement specialists and suppliers will be on hand to answer questions. Information on energy audits, fuel assistance and other programs will be available.

The workshop is cosponsored by the city, Rebuilding Together, the Clean Water Fund, Community Action Inc., and MASSAVE.

Silver Hill School plans fundraiser

The trustees and PTO of the Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School are raising money to replace the playscape, which has deteriorated and is closed for safety.

The latest fundraiser for this cause is a walkathon, titled Paws for a Playscape, which will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the school, 675 Washington St.

There will be music, refreshments, games, a moonwalk and raffles. Pledge forms are available at the Silver Hill School office or by calling 978-374-3448.

Chamber of Commerce seeks members

The Greater Haverhill Chamber of Commerce membership drive takes place today and tomorrow at the chambers' downtown office, 80 Merrimack St.

A membership drive celebration and networking event will take place Oct. 22 at Roma Restaurant, Middlesex Street.

Women's City Club to meet Tuesday

The Women's City Club of Haverhill will have its next meeting Tuesday at BrookRidge Community Church, formerly First Congregational Church, at 322 Main St., in Fellowship Hall.

The coffee hour will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by the business meeting at 2. The program will feature Stephanie Nugent.

She will present "The Power of Biography," a slide presentation that explores the life of Celia Thaxter from her childhood on White Island Light to her unexpected fame as a writer. Nugent transforms historical research into a performance. From the vantage point of the actor stepping into a role, participants can examine the forces that shaped Thaxter's work. They also are introduced to some of the writers, musicians and artists who followed Thaxter to her island home each summer.

Public Safety Committee meets tonight

The City Council's Public Safety Committee will meet tonight at 7 in the council office, Room 204, at City Hall.

Blood drive is Oct. 29

A Halloween Blood Drive will take place Oct. 29, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital, 145 Ward Hill Ave.
