Men from Lawrence, Haverhill arrested in Methuen on drug, assault charges
METHUEN — A Lawrence man faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer after he drove his car into a detective's undercover cruiser following a drug bust near the Merrimack Car Wash and Laundry on Burnham Road.
Nathanael Nunez, 21, of 220 Bruce St., was arrested about 10 p.m. on Newport Street with Jose M. Camilo, 34, of Haverhill, who was a passenger in the Chrysler Concorde.
In addition to the assault charge, Nunez also faces charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, along with a host of other charges, including operating recklessly to endanger, speeding, malicious destruction of property over $250, operating negilgently, red light and marked lanes violations.
Camilo's charges include: possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and conspiracy to violate drug laws.
Police seized 6 grams of cocaine.
Police said the incident started after detectives conducting surveillance in the Haverhill Street area witnessed a drug transaction between Nunez, Camilo and people in another vehicle in the car wash parking lot.
When police went in for the arrest, Nunez initially stopped his car, but then took off again, hitting the undercover car of Det. Tracey Connor, who was inside the police car at the time. That led to the charge of assault with a deadly weapon, police said this morning.
The suspects fled, but were found soon after on Newport Street when a resident of a home there called police to inform them that a car had just pulled into their driveway and shut off the lights. They were arrested by Officer Arthur Hardy along with Connor and Sgt. Chris Max.
Both suspects were held on $25,000 bail and will be arraigned today in Lawrence District Court.
