HAVERHILL — Vandals damaged a car parked in front of a Tremont Street home, police said.

The victim told Officer Garrett Sarfde that she parked her 2000 Ford Focus in front of her mother's home about 2 a.m. Saturday, and noticed about 8 a.m. Sunday that the gas cap had been cut from the car, police said.

The victim told Sarfde she suspected that someone tried to add a foreign substance to her gas tank.

She told Sarfde she also noticed dents and scratches that had not been there previously and said the paint on the passenger side of the car had been scratched with a sharp object.

She told police a neighbor saw someone near her car about 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

The neighbor told Sarfde a white car with two people in it had pulled alongside the victim's car about 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and that a man got out and began striking the car body and windows with a hammer.

The damage was reported at 5:32 p.m. Sunday, police said.
