Hearing slated tonight on Atkinson water withdrawal

By Meghan Carey

ATKINSON — A public hearing is scheduled for tonight on Hampstead Area Water Co.'s application for a large groundwater withdrawal.

The hearing, requested by the selectmen, is part of the state Department of Environmental Services' review of the application. The department is to outline the groundwater withdrawal process, and Hampstead Area Water Co. will present its plan.

The public can then ask questions, environmental services spokesman Stephen Roy said. Today also marks the beginning of a 45-day period when anyone can submit questions, which will be responded to in writing, he said.

After 45 days, the team will deny the request, approve for testing, or ask the water company for more information, Roy said.

The company submitted a groundwater withdrawal application last year, but that was deemed incomplete. Another application was filed in late March.

The hearing begins at 7 p.m. in Atkinson Academy's Dyke Auditorium at 17 Academy Ave.
