SALEM, N.H. — Vehicles with loads wider than 10 feet 6 inches can't use Exit 1 on Interstate 93.
Yesterday, workers on I-93 shifted traffic to a temporary southbound ramp at Exit 1. The traffic shift is designed to allow for the reconstruction of the existing Exit 1 ramp, including the replacement of seven bridges.
The temporary ramp will be in operation until November, according to the state Department of Transportation.
A detour sign will encourage southbound, oversized loads on I-93 to use Exit 2 instead of Exit 1.
SPS New England Inc. of Salisbury is the general contractor for the $22 million ramp reconstruction project. Work is expected to be finished in October 2009.
The construction is part of the overall I-93 expansion project, which will involve widening the highway from two lanes in each direction to four along a 20-mile stretch from Salem to Manchester.
