August 17, 2008 02:00 am Church serves up Swedish meatballs HAMPSTEAD — East Hampstead Union Church will hold a Swedish meatball supper on Saturday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The menu includes meatballs, egg noodles, carrots, peas, cranberry sauce, bread, assorted desserts and beverages. Take-out meals are available. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12. There is no charge for preschoolers. The church dining room is chairlift accessible. Summer music series presents last concert HAMPSTEAD — The final concert of the season for the Meeting House Park Summer Music Series will feature the John Penny Band on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The band, back for its third season, performs contemporary and traditional country music along with pop standards and oldies. The free concert is sponsored by the Hampstead Cable Advisory Committee.
Hampstead library offers book sale HAMPSTEAD — It's not too soon to start stocking up on some reading material for the colder months to come. The Hampstead Public Library annual book sale begins tomorrow at 1 p.m. and ends Aug. 29 at 6 p.m. Phillips Pond group meets Thursday SANDOWN — The Phillips Pond Association will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Town Hall. Walk and sketch in Hampstead HAMPSTEAD — Between 10 a.m. and noon Saturday, Michael Terrile will guide a Hampstead Conservation "Outside in Hampstead" event. It will be a nature-sketching event. Participants should meet at the West Road Conservation parking lot. Because so many wanted to take part in this event last year, Terrile asks those wishing to attend to call him to confirm at 329-4207 or e-mail him at m.terrile@comcast.net. Dates could change due to weather so call ahead, Terrile said.
Visit Olde Meeting House on Old Home Day DANVILLE — Celebrate Old Home Day on Aug. 24, starting at 3 p.m.with a nondenominational service at the Olde Meeting House. The historic building is located at 470 Main St., also known as Route 111A. Don Folkers, retired pastor from Newcastle, Maine, will present the sermon. Organ accompaniment will be provided by Judith Hunter with Patricia Chamer as soloist. Refreshments will be served immediately following the service in the rear courtyard. Danville's Olde Meeting House is the oldest in New Hampshire to survive in its original state. It was built about 1755 by a group of Kingston parishioners who were intent on separating from Kingston and creating a new parish.
'Toy Story' rescheduled in Windham WINDHAM — Movie Nite at Griffin Park has again been rescheduled due to inclement weather. See "Toy Story," if the weather cooperates, on Aug. 24. The movie will begin around 8:45 p.m. The bouncy houses and concession stand open at 6 p.m. Don't forget blankets, lawn chairs and bug spray. Plaistow's Great Hall dedicated next month PLAISTOW — The Great Hall at Town Hall will be dedicated to former resident Donald Sargent. Sargent made a number of large donations to the town over the last three years to help fund the renovation and redecoration of Town Hall. Sargent, now of Portsmouth, will be honored before an open house that will be scheduled for sometime in September. Residents will be invited to come see the renovations firsthand and have light refreshments.
Frisbee golf course now open PELHAM — An 18-hole Frisbee disc golf course is now open at no cost at George Muldoon Park on Mammoth Road. Discs can be picked up at Hillside Country Store across from the park on Mammoth Road. Players will have to leave their driver's license at the store until the discs are returned. Disc golf is like regular golf. Instead of hitting a golf ball, participants throw discs into the holes. The front nine holes cater to beginners, while the back nine holes are more challenging. More information is available by calling the Parks and Recreation office at 635-2721.
Head to the beach — and church SANDOWN — Grab a beach chair before heading to church next week. St. Matthew United Methodist Church and the Rockingham Church will hold the annual outdoor worship service at the town beach Sunday at 10 a.m. In addition to the service, Pastor Steve Murray will give people the opportunity to be baptized in the lake. "I think this is going to be an awesome service," he said. "It is not that often that we are able to offer baptism by immersion outdoors." People are asked to bring their own chairs and blankets. Parking will be available at the library and Town Hall.
Tour a garden, help feed the hungry LONDONDERRY — Take a stroll in a garden on Saturday to benefit the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter. Jim and Kathy McMahon will open the Tiffany Gardens B&B from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 23 for self-guided tours. The $10 admission goes to benefit the Nashua Soup Kitchen and Shelter. The rain date is Aug. 24.
Celebrate the end of summer in Derry DERRY — Take the sting off the end of summer by dropping by the Kidz End of Summer Bash. The party, set for Thursday at MacGregor Park, starts at 5:30 p.m. and features a free screening of "Ratatouille." There also will be moon jumps and refreshments for sale. Bring a blanket or beach chair and bug spray.
