Lemonade sales fund cancer research

SANDOWN — Take six families, including 15 children, add lemonade, a desire to help and a thirsty public. It all adds up to more than $400 for a childhood cancer foundation.

Inspired by Alexandra "Alex" Scott, a young cancer patient who sold lemonade to raise money for cancer research until her death at age 8, six Sandown families set up shop at Old Home Day for the second consecutive year.

They raised $500 last year at Old Home Day and more than $400 this year. Last year, they collected another $950 through their Web site, www.firstgiving.com/puckerup.

The families pitch in and donate the water, the lemonade and the cups, so all the profits go to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

"We have the same site this year, and we are still collecting donations from the online site," said Cathy Shoppe, whose family got the group effort rolling. "We were so pleased that this was a fundraiser in which the children could actually take an active part and really be involved."

Kids were crowded four deep at Old Home Day, all eager to serve lemonade and bank more money for cancer research.

"This is really a great thing. We all really enjoy doing it," 11-year-old Brooke Lucier said. "We did it last year and made a lot of money for cancer research, so we are happy to be doing it again."
