Award-winning chowder

HAVERHILL — Stephen and Susan Petrou, and chef Travis Brown from Olivia's/Krueger Flatbread in Haverhill won the first Winnekenni Chowderfest, held Aug. 10 at Winnekenni Castle.

The award-winning chowder was served at the castle again on Aug. 21 at the castle's annual Wine and Cheese Reception.

Junior Olympics on Sept. 20

HAMPSTEAD, N.H. — The Civic Club Junior Olympics for ages 6 through 17 is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, with a rain date of Sunday, Sept. 21. The event will take place at the Depot Road Fields Complex, and is free and open to Hampstead residents only. Athletes must wear sneakers only and both boys and girls must be at the field by 8 a.m.

This event, which includes track and field events, is always held on the third Saturday in September. The contact person for any questions is Mark Casey at 603-329-8283.

Raffle raises $14,700 for local causes

During the Feast of the Three Saints on Labor Day weekend in Lawrence, the St. Alfio Society held its annual raffle fundraiser, which netted the society $14,700.

Paul Licciardi of Haverhill won $5,000, Gabrielle Sewade of North Andover won $1,000 ,and Connie Faro of Salem, N.H. won $500. Proceeds will be used to help the local charities supported by the society, including Corpus Christi Parish/Holy Rosary Church, The Eagle-Tribune Santa Fund, Elder Services, Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence, Lazarus House, St. Alfio Villa and St. Ann's Home for Children.

Cleanup could get noisy

PLAISTOW, N.H. — Neighbors of the Beede Waste Oil site can expect to hear some noise for the next several weeks.

The project management company, Woodard & Curran, is entering into the next phase of cleanup design tomorrow. The company will be drilling, but has been instructed by the town to not begin until after 8 a.m.

Senior Foliage Trip

SANDOWN, N.H. — Sandown seniors age 60 and older are invited to participate in the annual Senior Foliage Trip on Monday, Sept. 29.

Registration includes coach bus transportation, lunch at Hart's Turkey Farm, admission to Castle-in-the-Clouds in Moultonborough, along with a stop in Tilton for a bit of outlet shopping.

The fee of $5 per person is payable to Sandown Recreation to help defray the cost of admission. Registration is on a first come basis and seats fill very quickly. A waiting list will be started once the bus is filled.

The bus will leave from Town Hall at 8:30 a.m. and return by 5 p.m.

Get ready to run, walk and help seniors

LAWRENCE — Lace up your sneakers. The 2008 RiverWalk 6K Run & Walk for Elder Services of Merrimack Valley steps off Sunday, Oct. 5.

Runners take off at 10 a.m., followed by the walkers at 10:10 a.m. Both start in front of the Elder Services offices at 360 Merrimack St., and the route follows the Merrimack River.

Yankee Timing has certified the route, and medals will be awarded in seven age groups for both men and women. There are also walk awards for oldest and youngest participants and team spirit. Racers may register at www.esmv.org.

The 19th annual RiverWalk will take place rain or shine, and the proceeds will be used to provide programs and services to elders in the Valley.

Don't want to run? There are lots of other activities, including face-painting, games, music, massages, raffles of gifts and gift certificates donated by local businesses and free food and beverages.

This year's guest celebrity and road race commentator will be Dan Roche, sports anchor and reporter for WBZ-TV and the host of "Red Sox This Week" on TV38.

Drainage work starts tomorrow

PLAISTOW, N.H. — Old County Road will be closed for two to three weeks, beginning tomorrow.

Al Hoyt & Sons is scheduled to begin installing drainage structures and a culvert pipe only the road. The work will begin at the recreation fields and extend to the Main Street intersection.

The street will be barricaded at both ends, and only local traffic should go by the barriers. There will be travel delays.
