September 16, 2008 12:09 am LONDONDERRY — A contractor accidentally hit a 1,000-gallon propane tank yesterday afternoon, causing a leak that took firefighters and the gas company more than two hours to bring under control. Londonderry fire Chief Kevin MacCaffrie said crews tried to plug the tank at 9 Hovey Road, but the tank started leaking again. Firefighters stayed at the scene, where a home was being built, until all the gas had been vented. No one was injured or had to be evacuated, but police did block the entrances to Hovey Road until the tank no longer posed a danger. Londonderry firefighters monitored the leak and sprayed water onto the tank to disperse the cloud of gas while it was emptying, MacCaffrie said. All 10 firefighters on duty and four off-duty firefighters responded. Londonderry sent two engines, while Derry sent a fire engine and an ambulance. MacCaffrie said because firefighters had no water supply in the area, located in a residential neighborhood near the orchards on Pillsbury Road, and the Windham, Pelham and Hudson fire departments sent water tankers. The incident occurred shortly after noon, during an 18-minute period, when Londonderry's Fire Department was being called to four medical emergencies and two reports of downed trees — one involving a fire sparked by electrical wires. Manchester, Auburn and Litchfield provided station coverage, MacCaffrie said.
