Five towns will host hazardous waste collection event
Bring household hazardous waste to Plaistow — again.
Selectmen decided to host Household Hazardous Waste Day themselves, after Atkinson officials canceled the collection because they didn't apply for the state partial reimbursement grant.
Plaistow interim Town Administrator Craig Kleman said the selectmen directed staff to plan the collection for Nov. 1, as long as two of the five towns that usually participate agreed to pay their share.
All five towns — the other four are Atkinson, Danville, Hampstead and Kingston — have agreed to allocate money, Kleman said. The towns will pay a percentage of the $12,000 it costs to run the collection, based upon how many of their residents attend on Nov. 1.
Plaistow has $9,600 in its budget allocated for household hazardous waste, Kleman said.
Typically, Plaistow hosts a spring collection and the other four towns rotate hosting it in the fall.
Selectmen from each town discussed the importance of household hazardous waste disposal at an area selectmen's meeting late last month, but Atkinson was still waiting for all the towns to commit before going out to bid for a collector. They tentatively decided that if they held the collection, it would be on Nov. 8.
Kleman said Plaistow highway supervisor Dan Garlington had already spoken with companies and Veolia Environmental had Nov. 1 open, as the selectmen had previously discussed.
Residents from all five towns can bring aerosol cans, used gasoline, fertilizers and other chemicals to the new recreation fields on Old County Road from 9 a.m. to noon that Saturday. People are asked to bring proof of residency, stay in their cars, and leave children and pets at home.
