Chief Petty Officer Frederick Welch III, formerly of Plaistow, the son of Michael and Sheila Dorman of Plaistow, recently retired after 20 years in the U.S. Navy.
Welch is a graduate of Timberlane High School. Entering the military within a few months of graduation, he did his basic training in Orlando, Fla. Upon completion of basic training, he was sent to Gulfport, Miss., where he was trained to become a Navy Seabee (Builder).
His first deployment out of the country was in 1991, when he was sent to the Persian Gulf to serve in Operation Desert Storm. He returned to the Gulf for Operation Desert Shield.
His primary home base was in Mississippi as part of the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74 working on projects, as needed, on and off base.
Other out-of-country deployments included Afghanistan and Iraq ,where he served more than one six-month tour building barracks.
He reached the rank of chief petty officer in 2002. His parents attended the ceremony in Washington, D.C.
He and his wife Christine live in Long Beach, Miss. They have two children.
Welch took a position with a private contractor in Mississippi, instructing new Navy Seabee recruits who are now doing the job he did while on active duty.
