Salem water line break repaired quickly

SALEM, N.H. — Someone drove over a temporary water line in front of 546 Broadway yesterday morning, disrupting water service to four properties in the area for about an hour.

Public works director Rick Russell said a crew working at the construction of the new Lowe's store in the area moved barrels and barricades town crews had placed around the above-ground line to mark it for motorists. When they replaced the barricades, they didn't put them in the correct place, Russell said, and someone pulling into a store there ran over the 2-inch water line.

Water was back on within the hour, Russell said. That paled in comparison to a water line break on Main Street a few weeks ago, when a 6-inch line broke and closed the busy intersection of Main Street and Route 28 for 17 hours.

The town is replacing the old 6-inch water line near the construction site with a 12-inch one, both for capacity and age reasons, Russell said.

That project is nearly complete, he said. Most of the new water line will be placed underground within a week. Once the new line is complete and has been tested and the water chlorinated, the project will be finished, Russell said.

That will definitely happen by the end of the month, but probably much sooner, he said yesterday.
