Letter: Testing older drivers is a matter of safety

To the editor:

At 80 years old, I am still driving. Yet I disagree with the recent letter writer who said that seniors have "earned the right to drive." Merely being a member of the so-called Greatest Generation hardly qualifies anyone to get behind the wheel of car.

I believe I am a competent driver, but would welcome any law that road-tests my abilities, even if the results disprove my own self-serving opinion. In fact, at any age, requiring a vision test only every 10 years is a joke!

Though removing incompetent drivers from the roads may take away their physical and emotional "independence," public safety must be the major consideration.
