Local is safest
As one who spent his professional career in the food protection industry, I have complete confidence in any farm product grown or raised in the United States. Within our borders, we have strict regulations that protect our fresh meats, vegetables and fruit from the farm to the consumer. In this worldwide food economy, the problems seem to surface from imported products where growing and packing conditions are not tightly regulated. The safest are local native products. Be suspicious of packages that are imported, and look for product of USA labels. We are still dealing with perishable food products so refrigerate and use good cleaning protection before using.

Gullible shoppers
How gullible we are as we load up our baskets at the supermarket. Everything is displayed in an enticing manner, duping us into believing that everything there is fresh and safe to eat. So many of our foods are shipped here from foreign lands whose waters are often tainted and whose warehouses are sometimes infested with vermin and rats. Migratory workers are employed to pick and pack vegetables and their hands are not always squeaky clean. Maybe if we boycott questionable foods, something will be done for us.

Our own vegetables
I might suggest to our government not to buy fertilizers from overseas. In my opinion, we are safe with our own vegetables.

Solve the problem
I think we all should be concerned. If they say tomatoes are bad, I stay away from that product or try to avoid them. Our government must get to the bottom of the problem before we read of any more deaths.
VIOLA HAYNES, Methuen
Not concerned
I'm not concerned, but I'm certain others are, which can only mean more anxiety has been inoculated into the American populace. It's bad enough that the current economic outlook for many Americans looks bleak, coupled with the thought we are fighting a war without end, there is now this sense that the government is floundering in the face of this nationwide outbreak of salmonella. Can anything be done? Why sure: Practice more distractions, count your blessings, keep your fingers crossed, and cry a lot. Cheers.
