Sound Off

Sports fees

The parents are nuts in Haverhill to pay the high prices for playing sports. It reeks of extortion. Maybe all the kids should quit. Then where would the athletic department be?

Behind on homes

The Obama-Biden ticket is already well behind any Republican ticket in one key measure. Between them, Obama and Biden own only two homes. That means McCain already has a 7-2 lead. And if McCain picks a running mate like fellow multimillionaire Mitt Romney — who owns homes in Belmont Mass., Utah, Michigan and Florida — McCain's lead will be insurmountable.

Boat ramp

The truth comes out from a local resident that there have been many problems from drugs, prostitution and trash that caused much police activity at the old boat ramp in Methuen. So the mayor, Debbie Quinn and the City Council — except Jeanne Papparlardo — knowing all these past problems, decide to dump these problems back on the residents of the area. Shame on you!

Marriage rights

Yes, marriage rights should be for all of God's creation. Jesus never once mentioned homosexuality in the Gospels. He must not have thought it was that important. He did speak volumes about love and being a hypocrite.

Drivers and dogs

To all who complain about elderly drivers: Teenagers and people who drive while on their cell phones are the worst ones. Those idiots who drive with their dogs on their laps are heading for disaster.

Police details

When a police officer retires, he is no longer a police officer. How does he wear a uniform and a badge and do traffic work? How does he beat out a regular patrolman for the job?

Has to change

I drove by a traffic detail on Ward Hill and the two officers were talking on their cell phones. Neither one of them was doing anything about the traffic. Something has got to change.

Lights out

A lot of the street lights in downtown Haverhill seem to be out. This never happened when National Grid owned the lights. What's going on here?

Right to work

If Andrea Traficanti was medically cleared to return to work in Lawrence, then she should have the right to return to work.

Road to ruin

I am 75 years old and I thank God I won't live to see the total demise of the United States. I love this country. Unfortunately, there are too many living here who don't care about it.

Ruined road

When are they going to fix the potholes in South Lawrence? Kingston Street is a disaster. My friend's car keeps getting eaten up by the big holes. Please have them fixed.

Bomber landing

I saw the B-17 bomber landing at the airport. Imagine several hundred of those passing overhead. What a magnificent sight. Thank you to all who served.

Have to go

Mayor Sullivan and Superintendent Laboy have to go. They are costing the taxpayers of Lawrence too much money.

Tax breaks

Taylor Armerding is right on about the elderly not needed a general tax break. I am an average 65-year-old, live modestly with enough food, a roof over my head, medicine and enough to keep me well and safe. Like many seniors I know, we don't need to splurge from a tax break that would only take from families struggling with young children. The poor of all ages should and do get breaks. However, all seniors are not poor. Although Sen. Obama may have fooled Generation Y with his vague change, he's not fooling all the seniors. Seniors have the years and the time to give back.

Water bills

Once again, Methuen has mailed its water bills. And once again, my bill has gone up. My bill has doubled from what I used to pay. Every time I get a water bill, it goes up and up and up. My retirement check just doesn't cut it. To the councilors who voted for this water increase: Thank you very much.
