Hopes high for Pats

We've waited for this weekend ever since February's disaster in the desert, otherwise known as Super Bowl XLII.

A 17-14 loss to the New York Giants at University of Phoenix Stadium wasn't what New England Patriots fans were expecting at the conclusion of what had been a perfect season.

The collapse at the end ruined everything. Even the Celtics' winning the NBA title couldn't salve the pain that came from having to watch Eli Manning and his mates celebrate in Glendale.

There are high hopes for the Patriots once again as they prepare for tomorrow's opening game in Foxborough against the Kansas City Chiefs. Given the pressure that built up in the course of running up an 18-0 record leading into the Super Bowl last season, however, we suspect there are more than a few fans who'd just as soon see them lose a game early this fall. So long as it's not the opener, or the following weekend to Brett Favre's Jets, or the weekend after that to Bill Parcells' Dolphins. ...
