Sound Off

It's a joke

As I said before, if certain people didn't write to Sound Off, we would never know how ignorant they are. If the person that chastised me for the one about the cowboy hat didn't realize that it was just a sarcastic joke, then he or she should not be reading the paper at all. As a matter of fact, the cowboy hat on the country singer has been a joke for years.

No compassion

To the person who wrote the opinion in Sound Off suggesting that God had something to do with Hurricane Gustav: Do you really think that God creates natural disasters that kill people, forces people from their homes, and destroys lives and property? Do you believe that the people who suffered due to Hurricane Gustav care that it delayed the start of the Republican National Convention? Do you have any compassion at all for the people who suffer in the wake of natural disasters?

Other choices

It's amazing the narrow view that pro-choice people take on unplanned pregnancies. A Thursday caller lamented that it was nice that Sarah Palin's daughter had a choice, but that her mother would work to place Supreme Court justices who would take away that choice. What pro-choice people didn't understand is that the choice Palin's daughter made was not between giving birth and having an abortion, but rather keeping the child or giving it up for adoption — and an additional choice of marrying the father or not! Furthermore, we seem to forget that long before the choice on abortion, women had two other choices, to have sex or not and to use birth control or not. Maybe instead of fighting about abortion, we should be working together on those first two choices!

Country first

Someone said that they thought God intervened and sent a hurricane to prevent the Republicans from having their convention on Monday evening. I think they are right, but God intervened and sent a hurricane to show Americans that John McCain will always put our country first, even ahead of his own political interests.

Needs a lawyer?

I'd like to know why the business manager for the Methuen School Department, who mind you, gets paid $100 an hour for part-time work, has a need to have an attorney as part of his contract. Doesn't he get paid enough that he should be able to afford his own attorney if he needed one? Seems to me that he may not know his job very well if he needs to bring an attorney with him to arbitration hearings. Shouldn't he have the experience to handle them himself? The former business manager did. There must be a lot of grievances anticipated if he was worried enough to require that in his contract. What is really happening with the administration?

Social Security

I just reviewed my Social Security account and it seems that if I become disabled now, whether it is a legitimate disability or becoming a drug addict, I will collect more Social Security now than I will get if I work another 10 years and retire. What is wrong with this country? Oh and I blame the Democrats for this one. They give out money right and left to drug addicts, alcoholics, illegal aliens, etc.

Republicans

On Wednesday night, Gov. Palin eloquently read the speech written by the GOP. On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 344 points. Four more Republican years, anyone?
