Letter: Community helped corral missing cat

To the editor:

On Oct. 14, unbeknownst to me, my cat snuck out of my home. Is Guernsey a special cat? By most people's standards probably not, but to me, for 12 years she has been my buddy and part of the family.

My friends and family immediately rallied in support. Kudos to Martha for choosing pink for the missing fliers! To each of you who walked or drove up and down the streets calling and looking for Guernsey, you're the best. I love you.

What has been amazing since the start of "Guernsey's great adventure" is the outpouring of support and concern from my neighbors and strangers alike. In my search for Guernsey what I found is that there are so many wonderful and kind people in my community. All of the calls, the shouts of encouragement and kind words gave me hope about finding Guernsey and a renewed sense of hope about humanity as well.

On Oct. 30, Guernsey's hero swooped in! Sandra, a wonderful woman who I had never had the pleasure of meeting before, took time out her life to drive to my home ... make multiple calls to me ... leave food out ... and finally caringly corral Guernsey until I could get to her home. Sandra is ultimately the one who put Guernsey back in my arms, but each person who read one of the missing fliers, found yourself looking for Guernsey or just took time to care, played a part in bringing her home.

Her vet is amazed that this 12-year-old, "pleasantly plump," declawed, indoor cat with a heart murmur could survive for more than two weeks on her own. After her ordeal, true to her sweet nature, Guernsey purred throughout her whole checkup, shots and all. Other than losing a couple of pounds, she received a clean bill of health. She is SO happy to be home, her purr engine is working overtime and she is being spoiled rotten!

I am still being overwhelmed with exclamations of congratulations and joy about Guernsey's safe return home. Who knew one lost cat making her way safely home could touch so many people?

Is Guernsey special? Without a doubt.

With heartfelt thanks and gratitude.
