Your view: Letters to the editor

Respect those with other views

To the editor:

I am writing in response to the recent letter "Republicans care only for themselves" by Jo Rossello (Oct. 26).

I am a registered independent voter in New Hampshire and I found her letter fascinating for its honest passion, its valuable message and its blatant hypocrisy.

She says, and I quote: " ... we, the Democrats are in the majority. We support our president, we want equal rights and respect for all ..."

Respect for all.

She speaks eloquently of respect for all, yet she only speaks of it after using almost half the letters column to insult a large portion of the American public. She uses derogatory words such as: "uneducated," "ignorance," "crazy," and "sheep" to describe a part of this country's "forever changing population," her fellow American citizens.

Respect for all?

She also states that these people: "dislike anyone who does not believe in what they think is their god, believe in their religion, share their values and see things like they do."

Yet her letter would lead the reader to believe she dislikes them because they don't think like her, because they don't share her values, because they don't embrace her viewpoint.

Respect for all.

Good words and wise ones, but those words would carry far more weight if she demonstrated that belief in her letter. Respect for all people, even those we disagree with.

In the end she's right of course. We need to find a way to live together, work together, compromise and hopefully someday overcome our differences, but that will never happen when even those who claim the moral high ground are so willing to mock, insult and disrespect other people for not being like them.

Nation heading down dangerous path

To the editor:

Are people aware of what is going on in this country? Do they realize the plan to destroy America as we know it is in full operation?

We have a president, Congress, and Senate whose main objective is to do what they want and not what the American majority want. They feel we work for their interests and our interests are unimportant. They are treating us as children insisting they know what is best for us because what is best for us will be best for them. Simply put more government control means more power for them. This current administration's performance to date cannot make this more obvious to me. The real frustration is when we sit back and let this administration dictate to us.

When there is legitimate opposition and objection voiced to Obama and his administration they refuse to listen. In a recent incident the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, ordered the locks changed on the House chamber doors to prevent the opposition from entering and participating in the discussions regarding government health care. Imagine a situation like this, doesn't sound like America to me.

We have a president waging war in his own country against Fox News for reporting the facts, exposing his destructive radical agenda and his czars for what they are. Look what happened to Van Jones, who was one of Obama's czars, and ACORN after Fox exposed the truth. Say what you will about Fox News but they were right on with these and that is why their ratings are so high, exceeding all other new networks.

Sorry, folks, in my eyes Obama is a fraud and his entire administration is full of deception. This president and his administration have strongly expressed a desire to expand government control in our lives which is in direct opposition to the U.S. Constitution. In fact, Obama has surrounded himself with Marxists, Communists, and Socialists who admire Mao Tse-tung, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro, praising their methods of government and hoping to implement them here in America. I sincerely hope and pray the people in this country wake up and realize what is happening to America under this current administration.

America must stay America the way the Constitution intended. America is not the land of entitlements; it is the land of hard work, opportunity and liberty for all, without government expansion. It is a very simple theory: You cannot have liberty when you have expanded government control.

We all need to be more attentive to what this administration is planning and oppose any plans that will destroy this great country. I can not emphasize enough the fact that this administration works for themselves and not for us.

I am hoping we all get more involved. If we don't object to and soon stop what this administration is planning, one day very soon we will wake up to be exactly like Africa, China, Cuba, Iran, Russia, Venezuela etc., all of which have made the transformation to big government.

Volunteers needed to help elderly

To the editor:

The purpose of this letter is to ask the folks from Greater Lawrence for their assistance in helping the elderly living in the area with some of their day-to-day tasks, in order to allow them to keep their independence and remain safely in their homes for as long as possible.

We need 10 more "Volunteer Companions" in the Greater Lawrence area to help elders with daily tasks such as:

Food shopping. This can be done at the same time volunteer does their shopping.

Picking up prescriptions.

Just sitting and talking with an elder, offering encouragement, as you would for a parent.

Providing occasional rides to appointments.

The "Volunteer Companion" may help with all of these tasks, or choose only to help with one or more of these tasks.

The elders who call us asking for help might be your neighbors. They are most probably elders who live alone and have no family living in this area, and really need some outside support to remain safely in their homes.

Americans are being encouraged by our leaders to create meaningful changes in their communities by engaging in "community service" and give of themselves; becoming a "Volunteer Companion" is one way of meeting this challenge; please call us and we will get you started in an exciting new experience.
