It appears that North Andover will make do with a 4-day-a-week police chief for many months to come. Chief Richard Stanley has been working part time as acting chief in the town of Wareham since August, using weekends and one vacation day a week.
Stanley said last week that Wareham likely won't hire a new chief until next August, which will give him a year on that job. The arrangement will sweeten Stanley's pension when he retires — likely next year.
North Andover officials last week gave their blessing to his continued double-employment, saying it hasn't hurt the town.
We remain skeptical. But if town officials think it's working so well, maybe they should consider a part-time chief to save the town some money when Stanley steps down from his $132,000-plus per year position.
