Letter: Science and religion favors the unborn

Published: December 1, 2008

To the editor:

In his recent letter, Dante Ippolito writes that "Religion cannot impinge on rights" (Nov. 23) in his pro-abortion viewpoint. It seems his universally accepted, conventional wisdom always needs repeating — because it contradicts the truth.

Genetic science emphatically tells us that human life begins at conception. At the moment the male and female chromosomes combine, a completely unique genetic code is formed. No new genetic code is introduced during the growth of the (human) organism.

This places Catholics and most Christians on the side of science, and those who support abortion into suspension of reality. Perhaps we should label the pro-abortion world view as a quasi "religion" (it sure has infallibility and dogma covered!). But that would bring us back to the original point; that no religion should impose its views against the rights of others. Agreed. But, among competing "religious" world views, whose rights are most important — those of the woman or of the child? Since the right to life far outweighs the right of protection from the hardships of bringing a child into the world, the rights of the unborn need to prevail. Science and religion both say so.
