Step up

Why are all the people helping Mary of Andover renovate her fire-damaged home from North Andover? Why didn't anyone from her hometown of Andover step in to help her?

Money for driver

I am a Lawrence special needs teacher. I am desperate for people to help with my sick students. Perhaps Superintendent Laboy could send his driver to help me with my children. I have been told there is no money in the budget for my very, very needy little ones.

Gifts of food

Having been a school bus driver for more than a quarter of a century, I have received a great many generous gifts over the holidays for which I am grateful. Problem is, many gifts are certificates to eating establishments and doughnut shops or are homemade goodies which, for medical reasons, I cannot use. I give these gifts away so they are not wasted. I don't have the heart to tell people I can't use their generous gifts for fear of hurting their feelings. For people who like to give gifts of food, you might consider a gift card to a supermarket or a generic card that can be used anywhere. This assures your gift can be used by the person it was given to.

Dog parks

This is in response to the Haverhill resident regarding the dog trail: You made a comment about how they shouldn't have to build a dog trail for people with "Live Free or Die" license plates that use it. I live in Derry, N.H. We have a beautiful dog park, where mostly non-town residents come to use it all the time. The place is always being used by dogs and their owners, and yet half of the plates are Massachusetts license plates or those from other towns. Stop whining about us using your parks and your dog trail that you don't even have yet.

Has everything

As a City of Lawrence taxpayer, I'd like to know how Superintendent Laboy not only makes an enormous salary, but he has a leased vehicle. How much more money are we paying this guy to perform his duties? A few years ago, he was caught altering the vehicle for his wife. Why don't we just give this guy a valet, a servant and a maid? He has everything else. It's amazing what we're paying this man and he can't even drive himself? It's outrageous.

Foreign leaders

To "War crimes": Any good TV station showed George Bush shaking everybody's hands before they went out to the lobby. So all the regular newspeople didn't do anything, they just showed how it looked like George Bush was being shunned, when he actually talked to all of them before they stepped out. So, you're wrong.

A major award

Regarding the movie "A Christmas Story": A couple of years ago, my children bought me the lamp, or a copy, and it proudly sits in my front window on Main Street, North Andover. It's a lot of fun. I introduced the movie to my children, they introduced it to their spouses, and they in turn showed it to their children. It is truly an American classic. So is the lamp.

Haverhill sports

I really enjoyed reading the "Down Memory Lane" in the sports page of The Eagle-Tribune, especially reading about the accomplishments of some great Haverhill High School athletes over the years. I just wonder what has happened to Haverhill sports in the last four or five years? The football team used to be a powerhouse for years and numerous great athletes went on to college. This year, it's another season when we won one game. It really is unbelievable what has happened to Haverhill sports, especially the football team going downhill every year.
