To the editor:
"When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty."
Thomas Jefferson
The federal government has been on a growth path since the Civil War. Now we are on the verge of an enormous transition in the power as the federal government works to pass health care and cap and trade plans that would extend its tentacles into almost every aspect of our lives like a cancer, and change the nature of our constitutional, free-enterprise republic that so many have sacrificed their wealth and lives to create and protect.

During last week's meeting of the Alliance of Derry Taxpayers, the school budget was discussed in detail, specifically the impact it will have on Derry taxpayers. In addition to the looming state budget cuts that may result in a $7.5 million cut in funding from the state, we are faced with the increased cost of pensions and insurance.

Stick with civil unions
To the Sound Off caller "Right vote," who congratulated the 47 percent of Maine citizens who voted for gay marriage: They still lost. Gay marriage has lost in 31 states so far. I hope we never see it in our lifetime. When gays can procreate without the opposite sex, then they can have the word marriage. They do deserve the same rights and they can have that in civil unions.

I was dismayed, yet not surprised, to hear that once again the majority, given the right to vote, has snubbed minority rights.
I am referencing Maine's decision to repeal the right of gay marriage. Federal ruling allowed for this law, but in a recent referendum, the state took a step backward from moving towards equality for all.

Quit double parking
Can something be done about the double parking on Essex Street in Lawrence? The last time I went down there, someone was double parked and when I honked my horn to see if they were going to move, they actually jumped out of their vehicle and challenged me to step out. I didn't see any policemen around to report the incident, but something has to be done about it. Spots are available and yet there are cars double parked right next to them. Please, Chief Romero, do something so that we can return back to the city.

I am writing to bring the attention of those present at the Boxford Town Meeting Oct. 27, the unjust attack on John McCormack after his presentation in support of Article 10.
In his presentation, he mentioned the West Common project, which had been approved by the Community Preservation Committee. He later stated that the CPC had wasted tens of thousands of dollars for plans, studies and surveys for proposed projects.

Our congressional representatives, Carol Shea Porter and Paul Hodes, voted for a health care bill that will add a trillion dollars of liability to our national debt and control one sixth of the economy of the United States.
Thanks for care
Last week my wife was brought to the emergency room of Lawrence General Hospital with possible strokes or TIAs. She was later admitted. I would like to congratulate Diane Anderson, president and CEO, for her leadership and positive changes made at this hospital. From the ER receptionist to all the nurses, attendants, technicians and doctors, it was very obvious to observe the kindness and compassion given to my wife. I would classify the care as excellent throughout the hospital.

Jobs lost
I cannot believe after voting for Obama that they still think that health insurance and the war is the most important thing facing this country. How blind can you get. The most important, now and always will be, is jobs. I grew up during the Depression and I will say this - without jobs forget the other two because without jobs there will be no money around to support the other two. I wish someone could tell me this: When they were outsourcing jobs to foreign countries didn't people realize that someday it would come back to bite us, which it has already started, and this is only the beginning.

Arthur Miller said that, "Betrayal is the only truth that sticks."
