Scheidegger, Whittier on the upswing

January 04, 2009 01:55 am

Pat Scheidegger and the Whittier are on the rise at the start of the new year.

Scheidegger, who recently won his weight class at the Pentucket Tournament, had two pins among three wins as the Wildcats swept Acton-Boxboro (51-21), Andover (63-17) and Haverhill (41-34) to improve to 5-3-1. It was the first time that Whittier has ever beaten the Hillies.

"Pat has stepped it up and looks a lot stronger than last year," said Whittier coach Rich Durkin of Scheidegger, who is 13-3 on the year.

"I'm pretty happy with the way things are going so far. We lost a couple (Triton, Beverly) we could have won, and we've been missing some guys, so overall we're doing well."

Also 3-0 yesterday for the Wildcats were Anthony Eugenio, Steve Surrette and heavyweight Nick Deveau. Sophomore Kyle Murray filled in nicely at 125 with a pair of wins.

Haverhill, meanwhile, defeated Andover 39-36 and Acton-Boxboro 42-21. Tom Holt went 3-0 to pick up his 108th career win to move into second place all-time for the Hillies, trailing only David Leonardo. Edwin Rozon (125), Dan Chory (140) and Isaiah Williams (160) were also 3-0.

Lawrence fell to powerhouse Burlington by a respectable 40-27 score but blasted Woburn (53-12) and Hudson (57-7). Jorge Aquino (103), Jose Valerio (215) and heavyweight Pedro Cruz were all 3-0 and usual backup Anthony Henriquez was 2-0 at 189.

North Andover defeated both Pinkerton (48-31) and Reading (43-21) before falling to Natick 47-21 in the finals of the Reading dual-meet tournament. Jason Ricketts, Matt Parkes and heavyweight Mike Miller all had two pins and were 3-0 on the day for the Knights, who are 8-2 on the year.

One more win will give head coach Dave Castricone his 608th win and tie him with Lowell's George Bossi as the all-time winningest coach in Massachusetts and New England.

For Greater Lawrence (3-2-1), which blasted Leominster 64-12 but lost to Pinkerton 48-31, Ray Diaz was 2-0 at 130, with one win over Pinkerton's Lowell Holidays placer David Owens. Also, Luis Ruiz won two matches and first-year wrestler Juan Herrera won a match at both 189 and 215.

Colin Crowell continued his fine season for Pinkerton as he recorded three wins at 140.

North Reading/Lynnfield whipped Winthrop (54-24), but fell to Wakefield (54-21) and Melrose (50-18). C.J. Venuto (140) and Chris Klove (189) were both 3-0.

Methuen battled Pentucket to a 42-42 tie and defeated Beverly 44-33, but lost to Ludlow. 55-7. Nate Krikorian continued to wrestle well, going 3-0 at 152. For Pentucket, which lost to both Beverly and Ludlow, Dan Dragon (135) and Austin Perreault (140) were both 3-0.

ÔÇæÔÇæÔÇæ

St. John's Prep improved to 12-1 with shutouts of Greenfield (57-0) and Shepherd Hill (75-0) and a win over Quabbin (39-25). North Andover's T.J. Crabtree (125), Joe Kelly (135) and Ryan Harding (145) as well as heavyweight Kevin Poplaski of North Reading were all 3-0.

Central Catholic continued to look sharp in the early season, blasting Dracut 54-22. The Raiders (2-0) had seven pins, including by 103-pounder Ryan O'Boyle and heavyweight Pat Driscoll.
