Maranto's marathon win lifts Hillies

Girls Tennis

Emily Maranto's three-set victory made the difference in Haverhill's 3-2 victory over non-league rival Amesbury. Maranto rebounded to take the decisive set, 6-3, to break the deadlock and lift the Hillies to the .500 mark (5-5).

Yuri Oiwake steamrolled her opponent at first singles for a 6-0, 6-0 romp. At second doubles, Kristin Kelly and Callie Garrison won in similarly overwhelming fashion 6-0, 6-1.

Central Catholic broke into the win column for the first time, topping Tewksbury, 4-1. The first doubles pairing of Casey Cook and Mia Berni won the day's feature match, pulling out a second set tiebreaker for the triumph.

Boys Lacrosse

Wade's OT tally gives Royals win

Brandon Wade took the ball off the faceoff, flew past his defender and fired a shot past the goalie to give Georgetown a 10-9 overtime victory over Swampscott.

The Royals trailed 9-7 with two minutes remaining in regulation. But David Laflamme scored first, then Billy Smith took a feed from Nick Sheffield and tied the game.

Laflamme scored a team-high four goals while Jon Bordonaro and Wade each scored twice and James McGillicuddy tallied one goal for the winners.

Triton defeated Pentucket 13-6. Taylor Cahill and Alex Connolly each scored twice for the Sachems.

Hanging with a strong Billerica squad through the brunt of three quarters, Central Catholic eventually fell to the Indians, 13-7. Josh Clark, Corey Hamilton, Matt LaFrance and Matt Smith put up an aggressive defense to keep the Raiders (8-6) in the hunt.

Mark Scalise's unassisted tally with 49 seconds to play proved to be the game-winner as St. John's knocked off BC High, 10-9. The Eagles (11-2) got stellar defense from senior Brogan O'Connor of Haverhill.

Baseball

Pentucket pounds H-W

A 13-hit attack allowed Pentucket to breeze past Hamilton-Wenham, 12-3. Peter Creamer had three hits, walked twice, scored three times and drove in a run for the Sachems. Jordan Silva added strong defense to a two-hit effort, and Justin Bolla reached four times and scored three runs.

North Andover scored four runs in the last two innings to defeat Georgetown 4-1. Brian Meikle gained the win, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Taylor Livingston drove in two runs to jump-start the offense, while Ryan Sifferlen and Josh Breeden each added an RBI. Chris Esposito drove in the only run for the Royals.

Pat Noone went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored in his first varsity start to help Central Catholic past Chelmsford 12-3. Marc Crowley backed him with a 2-for-4 performance, scoring twice and knocking in three runs.

Strong situational hitting gave pitcher Brian O'Neil all the runs he needed, lifting North Reading to a key 3-0 victory over previously unbeaten Masconomet.

Softball

Mannion, 'Cats batter Lynn Tech

Whittier beat up on Lynn Tech 18-2 in a game that was called after five innings. Tiffany Mannion was 3 for 3 with three runs and Danielle Ryan drove in three runs.

Lauren Kalsin was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Sarah Osborne had a two-RBI single, but it wasn't enough for Georgetown, which fell to Triton 17-7.

Boys Track

Unbeaten Central downs Hillies

KB Oshodi won the long jump and triple jump and anchored the winning 4x100 team as Central Catholic cruised past Haverhill 115-30. Other Central double winners were Chris Wilbar (100, 400) and Chris Farren (shot put, discus).

Central will be at fellow unbeaten Andover next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. with the MVC Large title going to the winner.

Mike Ford (javelin), Brendan Lavoie (110 hurdles) and Ethan Penney (mile) were winners for the Hillies.

Whittier Tech suffered its first loss, falling to Chelsea 71-65 in a meet which went down to the final event. Chris Pendleton won three events for the Wildcats, including the victory in the 4x100 relay. Matt Miles helped win the 4x100 and also won the 200 meters. Bryan Trickett threw the javelin a personal best 157-5.

Girls Track

Stabile, O'Brien shine in defeat

Behind Boston College recruit Sara Missert, who had three impressive efforts to capture the long jump, triple jump and 400, Central Catholic won its battle of unbeatens with Haverhill, 87-58, clinching at least a share of the MVC Large title. Central improved to 4-0 with just its dual meet against Andover remaining.

Lauren Berg won the shot and javelin and Kylie Giroux and Katie Lafrance set personal bests to win the discus and high hurdles, respectively.

The Hillies' Samantha Stabile (high jump, 100, 200) matched Missert with three stellar winning performances while Katelynn O'Brien provided another highlight with her victory in the pole vault.

Chelsea swept PMA and Whittier. PMA also bested the Wildcats 104-30. Whittier's Kimberly Martin captured the two-mile and also grabbed a third in the long jump while Lisa Leak won the discus.

Girls Lacrosse

Sachems survive slugfest

Pentucket beat Newburyport 17-13 behind Sarah Galligan's four goals and two assists. Breanna Yocum and Kayla Jewett each scored three goals.

Colleges

Merrimack drops season finale

Merrimack College's baseball team ended the season on a down note, finishing on the short end of a 7-6 Senior Day verdict to Southern Connecticut. Andover's Ryan Shepard scored twice in the late innings to give the Warriors (18-27) a temporary lead. Southern Conn. erupted for three ninth-inning runs to swipe the victory.

Merrimack finished eighth in the Northeast-10 (13-17).

Merrimack College's Kerri Bomil and Dennis Rugg were named to the Northeast-10 lacrosse All-Academic teams. Bomil, a sophomore from Lowell, maintains a 3.8 GPA as a history major and has scored 25 goals in 25 career games. Rugg, a senior from Marshfield, has a 3.7 GPA while totaling 23 points over his four-year career.

UMass Lowell earned the fourth seed in the Northeast-10 baseball tournament and will play No. 5 Pace University today at 4 p.m. in first round action at LeLacheur Park.

Behind a 3-over par 75 from Methuen's Anthony Gallardo, UMass Lowell sits in sixth place after two rounds at the NCAA East/Northeast Super Regional golf tourney at Back Creek Golf Course in New Castle, Del. Gallardo is tied for 10th individually with a 152.
