Softball
Sophomore Candace Waldie laced a double with two on in the bottom of the seventh to put North Andover over the top 5-4 against upset-minded Lynnfield. Waldie finished with four RBIs while Krissy Whitley added two hits and two runs and Alison McCarthy scored twice.
Jess Lambert got the start and Nicole Jones hurled three shutout innings to close the game. The Scarlet Knights improved to 7-2 while Lynnfield fell to 5-6.

Freshman Trudy Goetchius was a home run shy of the cycle, driving in three runs in Greater Lawrence's 9-2 thumping of Mystic Valley. Kaleigh Gilbert delivered three singles and two RBIs for the Reggies in a crisply played contest lasting just over an hour.

O'Neil, Hornets buzz Masco
Savvy base running and strong situational hitting gave pitcher Brian O'Neil all the runs he needed, lifting North Reading to a key 3-0 victory over previously unbeaten Masconomet. Kevin O'Leary drove in runs with a sacrifice fly and an infield grounder. Zach Hastings plated the Hornets' middle run with a triple, and senior shortstop Rick Chrisos continued to draw the attention of hit opponents with another four-star defensive effort.

North Andover scored four runs in the last two innings to defeat Georgetown 4-1. Brian Meikle gained the win, allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Taylor Livingston drove in two runs to jumpstart the offense, while Ryan Sifferlen and Josh Breeden each added an RBI. Chris Esposito drove in the only run for the Royals.

An infusion of talent from the junior varsity squad helped Gr. Lawrence Tech shore up its defense and defeat Mystic Valley, 7-4. Junior Luis Ruiz (two hits and an RBI) and sophomore Angel Rivera especially excelled in their first varsity action, helping freshman pitcher Paul Menjivar (complete game eight-hitter) win his initial start.

After Tim Higgins stroked a three-run triple, triggering a four-run fourth inning and a two-run Methuen lead, Lowell rebounded in the seventh with two home runs, five runs and a 10-7 victory. Walks dogged the Rangers all day as three hurlers issued 11 free passes.

Oshodi, Central cruise past Hillies
KB Oshodi won the long jump and triple jump and anchored the winning 4x100 team as Central Catholic cruised past Haverhill 115-30. Other Central double winners were Chris Wilbar (100, 400) and Chris Farren (shot put, discus).
Central will be at fellow unbeaten Andover next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. with the MVC Large title going to the winner.

Brian Sealy, Rogers Benscome, Pedro Roman and Ivan Perez had two victories each as Greater Lawrence won its first meet of the season, 96-40 over Mystic Valley. Sealy, a freshman, stood out in the sprints while Josh Ortiz added quality points in the long distance events.

Whittier suffered its first loss, falling to Chelsea 71-65 in a meet which went down to the final event. Chris Pendleton won three events for the Wildcats, including the victory in the 4x100 relay. Matt Miles helped win the 4x100 and also won the 200 meters. Bryan Trickett threw the javelin a personal best 157-5.

Raiders remain unbeaten
Behind Boston College recruit Sara Missert, who had three impressive efforts to capture the long jump, triple jump and 400, Central Catholic won its battle of unbeatens with Haverhill, 87-58, clinching at least a share of the MVC Large title. Central improved to 4-0 with just its dual meet against Andover remaining.
Lauren Berg won the shot and javelin and Kylie Giroux and Katie Lafrance set personal bests to win the discus and high hurdles, respectively.

Chelsea swept PMA and Whittier. PMA also bested the Wildcats 104-30. In that matchup, PMA's Tori Hodson won three events and Meg Peeler took two and ran on the winning relay. Whittier's Kimberly Martin captured the two-mile and also grabbed a third in the long jump while Lisa Leak won the discus.

Cosgrove, Platz lead Rangers
A near-perfect run of singles performances highlighted Methuen's 5-0 victory over Notre Dame. Katie Cosgrove, Julie Platz and Kim Wentworth won 36 of 37 games for the Rangers (7-2).

Marenholz goal nets first Hornet win
Derek Marenholz scored with 15 seconds remaining to earn North Reading its first win of the season, a 9-8 thriller over Lynn Classical. Sophomore Pat Sullivan notched his first career hat trick to lead the Hornets (1-12).

Hanging with a strong Billerica squad through the brunt of three quarters, Central Catholic impressed but eventually fell to the Indians, 13-7. Josh Clark, Corey Hamilton, Matt LaFrance and Matt Smith put up an aggressive defense to keep the Raiders (8-6) in the hunt.

Warrior baseball falls in finale
Merrimack College's baseball team ended the season on a down note, finishing on the short end of a 7-6 Senior Day verdict to Southern Connecticut. Andover's Ryan Shepard scored twice in the late innings to give the Warriors (18-27) a temporary lead. Southern Conn. erupted for three ninth-inning runs to swipe the victory.
Merrimack finished eighth in the Northeast-10 (13-17).

Merrimack College's Kerri Bomil and Dennis Rugg were named to the Northeast-10 lacrosse All-Academic teams. Bomil, a sophomore from Lowell, maintains a 3.8 GPA as a history major and has scored 25 goals in 25 career games. Rugg, a senior from Marshfield, has a 3.7 GPA while totaling 23 points over his four-year career.
