Santacroce leads Lawrence to upset of St. John's Prep

Tyler Santacroce recorded five kills and seven blocks and Lawrence downed St. John's Prep 25-21, 25-19, 25-16. Luis Castillo chipped in with eight kills and seven blocks while Jeffrey Matos recorded seven kills and 10 blocks and Ylvin Hiraldo stood out at setter for the Lancers.

"I finally saw the team play relaxed tonight," said Lawrence (10-5) coach Tony Hajjar. "We made very few mistakes and weren't giving away points."

Methuen's lone senior, Roudy Marcelin, delivered the game of his career on senior night with 12 kills and eight blocks as Methuen crushed Billerica 25-12, 25-22, 25-15. Corey Michaud (11 kills), Steven Kupiec (9 kills) and Mark Dougherty (27 assists, five digs) all stood out for the Rangers (6-9).

Tom Gomes delivered 24 assists as Central Catholic downed archrival Andover 25-22, 25-18, 25-21. Freshman Jim Zenevitch had nine kills while Rory Blinn notched 11 kills, Adrian Gonzalez recorded 14 kills and Dan Leary had 18 digs for the Raiders (8-4).

Meaghan McCarthy's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth squeezed Andover past Lowell, 3-2.

Katie McCarthy led off the inning by reaching base on an error. Jeanette Doucette laid down a bunt that was bobbled, allowing McCarthy to advance to third and Doucette to reach first safely. After an intentional walk to slugger Tricia Martin, Meaghan McCarthy ripped a single through the hole between first and second to drive home the winning run. Pitcher Kathleen Cheney totalled nine strikeouts for the Warriors.

Paige Fleming exploded for six RBIs in Methuen's 16-1 win over Lawrence. Fleming belted a three-run homer to go with a two-run double and a sac fly to close out the Rangers' scoring. Methuen pitchers recorded 11 strikeouts.

North Andover downed Georgetown 7-2. Alison McCarthy, Danielle Fournier and Devyn Thompson each had RBIs for the Scarlet Knights, and Kristin O'Connor tallied two hits.

North Reading bested Masconomet, 17-5. Caroline Gattuso had four RBIs, three hits and three runs to go with her complete game victory on the mound. Mikaela Carney recorded three RBIs, four hits and three run while Alex Moise recorded a team-high four hits and four RBIs.

Michelle Hollebeke dominated for Phillips Academy, striking out 15 in a 6-1 win over BB&N. Hollebeke scattered four hits, all singles, and did not allow an earned run. Methuen's Brianna McCarthy had a hit for the Big Blue.

Britt Hart struck out a dozen and knocked an RBI triple in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as Brooks fell to Lawrence Academy 6-3. Kelly Toomey and Emmy Gustafson also stood out.

Presentation of Mary fell to North Shore, 8-6. Alex Noe was 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI and Catherine George scored twice for the Panthers.

Greater Lawrence fell to Minutemen, 8-0. Sophomore Charina Tatis supplied the only two hits for the Reggies.

North Andover defeated Masconomet 12-10, dealing Masco its first loss of the season. Emily Vento led the way with four goals and Jenn Pino added three goals and an assist of her own for the Scarlet Knights. Stephanie Taylor turned in the game of her career, making a career-high 21 saves.

"She had a tremendous game," said coach Karen Lahey. "She knew that she would be shot at a lot and she kept her composure."

Katie Herter scored five goals to help Brooks cruise past Lawrence Academy, 16-4. Christine Donovan scored two goals and nine other players contributed one goal each for the winners. Carly Churchill made six saves.

Marie Pescatore scored six goals and assisted on five others as North Reading bested Wilmington 18-14. Laura Bellino scored four goals and Christine O'Leary, Alessandra LeFort and Ashley Kern each scored once for the Hornets.

Jess Salley was one of three Andover players to strike for multiple goals in a 16-4 win over archrival Central Catholic. Salley scored a team-high three goals, while Heather Sullivan and Kelly Fox each potted two goals. Regina LaRose netted a pair for the Raiders.

Phillips Academy coasted to a 16-8 win over Milton Academy. Dana Feeny tallied four goals and an assist, Alissa Fromkin added three goals and Summer Washburn and Britney Van Valkenburg also scored twice apiece.

North Andover crushed Lynnfield 111-34. Nick Faucher won the javelin with a heave of 154-0, and also ran on the winning 4x100 relay. Chris Riedel won two events (long jump and triple jump), as well as running on the 4x100 team and Drew Pickul won the hurdles and ran on the 4x400 relay that was victorious.

Phillips crushed Cushing, 96-42. Andover's Corbin Tognoni won both hurdles events, while Michael Bernieri threw the shot put and the discus for wins. Michael Donelan won the triple jump and the 200.

North Reading earned its first win of the season, defeating Ipswich 74-70. Matt Sexton led the Hornets with wins in the high jump, 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles events.

Methuen fell to Tewksbury, 76-69. Josh Adams earned victories in the long jump and triple jump, as well as the 400. Nathan Pinciak won the 800 and contributed to the winning 4x400 relay.

Juan Lluberas was 3 for 4 with a pair of runs and two RBIs to lead Lawrence past Haverhill 13-8. Ruben Sosa had one hit and scored three runs, while Ruddy Espinal went the distance for the Lancers for the win.

Andover's Mike Palermo gave Phillips the lead with an RBI since in the second, and the Big Blue never looked back in an 8-1 win over Cushing Academy. North Andover's Bobby Farnham chipped in with an RBI triple for the winners.

Lawrence Academy toppled Brooks 15-1. Matt Murphy recorded a single and Derek Murphy threw three standout innings of relief in his first varsity appearance.

Shannon Conway continued her stellar season with wins in the long jump (15-5), triple jump (33-9), 400 (59.4) and 300 hurdles (46.3) as North Reading downed Ipswich 84-61. Alexis Capozzi won the 100 and 200 and Jackie Lytle ran on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

North Andover ran past Lynnfield, 94-51. Kathie Andrusin won the pole vault and the 300 hurdles and Allison Pronovost ran on the winning 4x100 relay and took first in the 200.

Methuen fell to Tewksbury, 114-31. Katie Oskar won the long jump and triple jump, Lea Freeman took the high jump and Lindsay Pare won the 200 meter.

Phillips cruised past Cushing 122-21. Alexis Dawkins won the long jump and 400. Nyab Khan added wins in the shot put and the discus.

Adam Trotta and Josh Mack teamed to win first doubles and lead Andover to a 5-0 win over Billerica. Eric Heath, B.J. Merinder and Phil Johnson swept singles for the Golden Warriors.

Haverhill's Alex Skinner won first singles and teamed with Sam Ehrlich to take No. 1 doubles and lead Brooks to a 9-0 win over Lawrence Academy. Charlie Cottingham and Alex Odesmith won No. 2 doubles for the winners.

Jeff Boyd and Ryan Swanson took first and second singles to lead Pentucket past North Reading 3-2. The Hornets were led by Chris Spano and Dave Vollor, who took first doubles 6-3, 6-2.

Haverhill's Fabian Schramm's win at third singles (6-0, 6-1) paced the Hillies past Lawrence, 4-1.

Central Catholic powered its way to a 4-1 win over Notre Dame of Tyngsboro behind a dominant performance from Maggie Hillman at second singles (6-0, 6-1). Kasey Cook and Mia Bernie combined for a 6-2, 6-4 win at first doubles for the Raiders.

Pentucket downed North Reading 5-0. Liz Sutera and Lauren Lienan performed well at first doubles for the Hornets.

In a battle of unbeatens, Phillips fell to Milton Academy, 8-7. Senior Arianna Van Sluytman won No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-2. The doubles team of Eliza Flynn and Lauren Wilmarth added a win and Carolyn Brown also stood out for the Big Blue.

Brendan Hughes notched a three goals and Justin Malins added two goals and five assists as Andover easily got past Tewksbury, 10-3.

Olav Goulet's five goals and one assist helped lift Brooks past Lawrence Academy, 10-3. Ross Pierce added two goals for Brooks. Jimmy Campbell stood out on defense and contributed two assists and Nick Galanos made 13 saves.

UMass Lowell baseball fell to Pace, 7-1, eliminating the River Hawks from playoff contention. Anthony Santos notched two hits for Lowell.
