May 10, 2008 01:24 am Cavaliers starting forward Ben Wallace is doubtful for Game 3 of Cleveland's playoff series against the Boston Celtics because of allergies and a left inner ear infection. Wallace started but played less than 4 minutes in Thursday night's game before he became dizzy and asked to come out. He staggered to the bench and had to be assisted by his teammates before the Cavs' training staff stepped in. Wallace underwent a series of tests at the Cleveland Clinic yesterday. The team said the defensive stopper could be upgraded but it was "best case, 50-50" that Wallace would play today in Game 3. Pro football: Patriots defensive back Andrews pleads to drug offense New England Patriots defensive back Willie Andrews entered a plea to a marijuana possession charge, but won't face any prison time. The 24-year-old Andrews admitted in court there was enough evidence to convict him at trial, but did not plead guilty. Lowell District Court Judge Neil Walker continued the case without a finding for a year. During that time, Andrews must speak to student athletes about the dangers of narcotics, pay a $1,000 fine and complete an NFL substance abuse program. Andrews was arrested in February after police pulled him over in Lowell. Prosecutors said he had $6,800 in cash on him, a half pound of marijuana and no means to smoke the marijuana. Auto racing: Stewart takes wreck-filled Darlington Tony Stewart must've needed a new surface to finally break through at Darlington Raceway. The two-time Sprint Cup champion had never won here in 19 previous races, four of them Nationwide events, dating to 1996. Yet, Stewart was dominant throughout in gliding to victory in the first race on Darlington's slicker, repaved surface. He was about the only one who got away unscathed. Fellow Sprint Cup stars Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Mark Martin had their nights ended by wrecks. Pro baseball: Sexson suspended for 6 games by MLB Seattle slugger Richie Sexson was suspended for six games and fined by Major League Baseball after charging the mound and throwing his helmet at a Texas pitcher the previous night. Bob Watson, baseball's vice president in charge of discipline, cited Sexson for "violent and aggressive actions." Sexson asked the players' association to appeal, and any suspension will be delayed until after a hearing. Seattle's Felix Hernandez and Texas' Gerald Laird and Sidney Ponson also were fined. Sexson charged the mound and flung his helmet at Rangers pitcher Kason Gabbard after the left-hander threw an eye-high pitch to him in the fourth inning of Seattle's 5-0 loss. While benches cleared, no punches were thrown. Sexson was ejected. AL Roundup: Rodriguez powers Tigers past Yankees Ivan Rodriguez had three hits and Kenny Rogers pitched into the seventh inning to help the Tigers beat the Yankees, 6-5. ... Casey Blake and Ben Francisco hit two-run doubles in a six-run seventh inning to help C.C. Sabathia and the Indians defeat Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays, 6-1. ... Scott Feldman and three relievers combined for Texas' third consecutive shutout and Brandon Boggs drove in three runs to help the Rangers beat the Athletics, 4-0.

Instead of throwing a tantrum on the mound, Lilly led the Cubs over Arizona, 3-1, in the first meeting between the teams since the Diamondbacks' first-round sweep in last year's playoffs. ... Freddy Sanchez singled home Brian Bixler with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Pirates a 3-2 win over the Braves. ... Ricky Nolasco joined the first-place Marlins' win parade with six strong innings, and Luis Gonzalez passed the 1,400 career RBIs mark with a bases-loaded double in a 7-3 victory over the Nationals. ... Rickie Weeks hit a bases loaded, two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Milwaukee a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. NBA playoffs: Boozer leads Jazz to 104-99 win over Lakers Carlos Boozer broke out of his slump with 27 points, leading the Jazz to a 104-99 victory over Los Angele, cutting the Lakers' lead in the series to 2-1. It was the Lakers' first loss this postseason. Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinal is tomorrow at Utah. The win made the home teams 11-0 in the four conference semifinal series. Pro basketball: Carlisle, Mavs have verbal agreement Rick Carlisle will be the new coach of the Dallas Mavericks, a decision expected for nearly a week but slowed by contract negotiations. The papers aren't signed yet, but team owner Mark Cuban confirmed in an e-mail that a verbal deal is in place. The contract "will be signed tomorrow (today)," with a news conference Wednesday because Cuban will be out of town until then. NHL playoffs: Malkin's two goals lead flyin' Penguins past Flyers Evgeni Malkin scored two dazzling goals five minutes apart to give Pittsburgh a two-goal lead, after Sidney Crosby tied it, and the Penguins rode their two big stars to a 4-2 victory over cross-state rival Philadelphia in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. Malkin, who is only 21 but is the leading scorer in the playoffs with 17 points following a three-point night, scored with 6.5 seconds left in the first period with a tired Flyers line on the ice to put Pittsburgh up 3-2. Pro hockey: Avs, Quenneville go their separate ways The Colorado Avalanche say Joel Quenneville is out as coach after three seasons. Quenneville was 131-92-23 in Denver, but just 2-2 in playoff series after inheriting a team that was on the slide after a decade of dominance in the NHL. The Avs were swept out of the playoffs by the Detroit Red Wings last week, and general manager Francois Giguere faces a huge task this offseason, facing decisions on 13 players who will become unrestricted free agents if they're not re-signed. ... When Olie Kolzig removed his nameplate from the Washington Capitals' locker room after their last playoff game, then skipped a mandatory meeting the next morning, everyone figured his time with the team was over. Now Kolzig confirms he won't be back. "For me, it was disappointing the way it ended. ... It just doesn't feel right," the 38-year-old goalie said. "But at the same time, as an athlete, you have to know when to move on." Kolzig never has played for another NHL franchise. Pro football: Brother of Jets safety fatally shot in Florida The older brother of New York Jets safety Abram Elam was fatally shot, the third sibling in the family to die by gunfire since 1987. Riviera Beach police officers were called to the scene of a shooting at about 12:35 p.m. yesterday, and found Donald Charles Elam shot in the lower back, according to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office news release. Donald Elam, 33, was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. Boxing: Peter reaches deal to fight Klitschko Samuel Peter will defend his WBC heavyweight title in the fall against unretired former champion Vitali Klitschko after the fighters' camps finally reached a financial agreement for the long-awaited fight. Dino Duva, Peter's promoter, and Klitschko adviser Shelly Finkel reached the deal in Mexico City on Thursday, just hours before the fight was scheduled to go to a purse bid, in which any promoter could have paid for the right to stage the WBC-mandated bout.
