... James Spring allowed just one hit and struck out a whopping 13 in a five-inning, complete game as North Andover downed Notre Dame of Lawrence 16-0. Brent Ringland was 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs and Aaron Brunette and Taylor Livingston each added a hit and drove in two runs for the Scarlet Knights.
Boys Tennis Merinder, Andover doubles team advance B.J. Merinder and the doubles team of Shane Huggins and Nitin Mahesh, all of Andover, advanced to the third round of the North sectional with victories yesterday. Merinder won his matches 6-3, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-3. Mahesh and Huggins won 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Fellow Golden Warrior Eric Heath won his first match, but fell later in the day.
Softball Giorgio, Guselli deliver key hits for Rangers Bryanna Giorgio singled home Jessi McCarthy, and Rebecca Guselli drove home Abbey Carbonneau for the two sixth-inning runs that gave Methuen a 3-1 win over Billerica. Winning pitcher Sarra Bergeron struck out five and doubled home a run. Colleges Methuen's Murray leads UMass Lowell to sixth Salem's Bob Liekweg was second in the 400 hurdles (53.24) and ran on the 4x100 team that was fifth overall as the UMass Lowell men placed sixth at the New England Track and Field Championship. Methuen's Cory Murray added an eighth in the shot put (50-21/2). Haley Catarius placed fifth in the 800 and ran on the 4x800 relay team that placed fifth in a school-record time of 9:24.82 to help UMass Lowell place eighth. Freshman Shanika Pitts was fourth in the 100 for the River Hawks. ... Northern Essex Community College's Shane Lee placed fourth in the 100 meters in tough weather conditions at Division 3 National Junior College Championships in 11.19. He was also 11th in the 200 in 22.72. Taylor Pagley added an 11th in the shot put (34-11) and discus and Sara Giannasca was 10th in the 100 (13.67) on the women's side.
