David Koerner went the distance and, despite giving up 13 hits, struck out 16 and limited Lowell to 3 for 19 with runners in scoring position. Jhlomar Veras had a key RBI early in the game and Kevin Miller was 2 for 4 with an RBI and scored twice, including the first run in the ninth inning. The Rangers are now back at .500 with a 6-6 mark. "This was a big win, especially the way we came back from the first inning," said Methuen coach Dave Fabrizio. ... Central Catholic edged Chelmsford 5-4. Ryan Kemp went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and a leadoff-triple. Unbeaten Zak Adamopoulos picked up his fourth win of the season, going 62/3 innings and giving up four runs. ... Softball Knights qualify again; Giorgio lifts Rangers North Andover (10-2) qualified for the tournament for the third straight year with a 6-2 win over Manchester Essex. Ali McCarthy was 2 for 3 and scored twice for the Knights and Krissy Whitley, who is hitting over .500, ripped a long 2-run double. ... Methuen scored four runs in the top of the first in a 7-2 victory over Andover. Hot-hitting Bryanna Giorgio was 3 for 3 with an RBI triple for the Rangers (11-4) and Jessi McCarthy was 1 for 3 and scored twice. Sarra Bergeron threw a four-hitter, striking out nine, for the win. For Andover (7-8), Meaghan McCarthy slugged a solo home run. ... Improving Presentation of Mary scored six runs in the top of the seventh in a 13-7 win over Greater Lawrence. Freshman Jessica Goulet and Katie St. Peter both had two-run doubles for the Panthers (5-8). Angie Gonzalez (2 for 3) had a two-run triple and scored twice for the Reggies and Paola Gutierrez was 2 for 3. ... Lisa Policelli was 4 for 5 with three runs and three RBIs as Central Catholic downed Lawrence 9-4. Monique Gosselin was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs and Tina Eringis and Carla Borrelli each had a hit and an RBI for the Raiders. For the Lancers, Lucy Francisco had a triple, scored one run and drove in another. ... Amesbury scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to shock defending Division 3 state champion North Reading, 4-1. Abby Pare and Kate Hathaway both had two hits and scored twice for Amesbury (12-3) while Alex Moise had two hits and an RBI for the Hornets (12-3).
Boys Tennis Hornets stun Masco; Nguyen Knights prevail North Reading pulled off a benchmark victory, beating Masconomet for the first time in eight years, 3-2. A singles sweep did the trick led by No. 2 Ray Zolman, whose best effort of the season provided a straight set decision. Jason Pacino avenged a CAL Open setback at first singles and No. 3 Jay Friberg's win sealed the deal for the Hornets (11-2). ... Josh Tang and Alex Shumway won No. 1 doubles 6-1, 6-0 to lead North Andover to a 4-1 win over Ipswich. Alan Nguyen won No. 1 singles and Matt Guerrera and Dann Nicolosi teamed to take No. 2 doubles for the Scarlet Knights. ... Phil Johnson, Andrew Mack and Randy Sartor didn't drop a game in their respective singles wins for Andover in a 5-0 win over Lawrence. Boys Lacrosse Defense sparks Central Central Catholic survived a tough day to best Triton, 8-4. Corey Hamilton drew the assignment of marking the Vikings' top scorer and shut him down with help from defenseman Josh Clark. Joe McCarthy led the Raiders (9-7) with three goals and two assists.
Girls Lacrosse North Andover sharp in win North Andover outclassed Beverly, 13-3. Katie Kleinendorst and Jenna Armstrong had three goals apiece for the Knights (14-1-1) and Katie Boringa played a superb defensive game, "igniting our offense," according to coach Karen Lahey. ... North Reading played a strong second half but fell short of Ipswich 16-12. Marie Pescatore had three goals and two assists for the Hornets and moved within four goals of 200 for her career. Laura Bellino also scored a hat trick. ... Danielle Deldotto of North Andover scored five goals and dished out three assists in Austin Prep's 21-9 win. Kim Valente of North Reading scored three goals and added two assists. ... Central Catholic fell to Shawsheen 10-7. Kelsey Richards scored four goals for the Raiders and Lisa Grant played well in goal in the second half after Liz Steele went out with an injury. ... Volleyball Lawrence outlasts Andover Lawrence beat Andover 23-25, 25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12. The Lancers (12-5) scored nine of the last 11 points, led by Jimmy Rojas who had 17 kills. The two proved to be talented and tough as they were involved in a nasty collision but shook it off and played on.
