Spinners explode then get no-hit

LOWELL — The Lowell Spinners received a major league boost last night in the completion of Sunday's regularly scheduled game. Following torrential downpours that suspended Sunday's game over the Oneonta Tigers after the top of the first inning, the Spinners broke out of their recent funk with a 15-hit performance, en route to a 14-2 win.

Lowell (7-6) started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, batting around as part of a seven-run barrage that knocked Aaron Fuhrman from the game. It included a Mitch Dening two-run homer and concluded with a Ricardo Burgos RBI double.

Oneonta (6-7) was unable to string anything together against Spinners pitcher Stolmy Pimentel, who relieved yesterday's starter Yeiper Castillo. Pimentel (2-0, 1.80 ERA) stuck out five, allowing just two hits, in five scoreless innings. Michael Tomoleoni closed out the win, pitching three innings, allowing two runs on three hits to pick up his first save.

However, the Spinners cooled off quickly as they got no-hit in a 2-1 loss in the nightcap, the first time in 95 years that a Lowell minor league team suffered a no-hitter. Lowell (7-7) scored its only run in the third without a hit.

Tonight the Spinners begin a three-game series at Aberdeen.

Surf 11, Pride 6

The Atlantic City Surf handled the Nashua Pride, 11-6, on the strength of a five-run fifth inning, in front of 1,270 fans at Holman Stadium.

The Surf were led by Anthony Granato, who went 3 for 4 with a double, triple, and two RBIs. Jeremy Pickrel was 2 for 3, hitting his team-leading seventh home run and also adding a double.

Defenders 1, Fisher Cats 0

The Connecticut Defenders won a pitching duel with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 1-0, on a sixth-inning RBI double by Carlos Sosa. Brett Cecil hurled five scoreless innings for the Fisher Cats, extending his scoreless streak to 10 innings. Orlando Roman also pitched two scoreless innings.

The two clubs will play a doubleheader today in Connecticut.
