Alliette captures Sons of Italy race

Kevin Alliette of Methuen beat a formidable field to take top honors at the 20th annual Sons of Italy Road race.

The 28-year-old Alliette won the 5K race in 15:38 with Benjamin Ndaya placing second (15:43) and Methuen's Stephen Plouffe third (16:07).

Naomi Mungay of Chelmsford buried the field in the women's race in 18:52.

Mike Fisher of Brookline won the 5-mile event in 25:46. The women's winner was Heather Cappello of Waltham in 28:22.

The race honored the military including local fallen soldiers. The top military efforts were by Joseph Sekvaggi of Boston in the 5K (21:14) and Robert Schrater of Salem, Mass., (35:24) in the 5-mile.

Overall, 253 runners finished the races.
