Astros' Dattilo was always a special talent
From the moment he stepped onto the field, Pinkerton star Bobby Dattilo's talent was clear.
"We saw him freshman year and we said this guy has to play with us on varsity," said Astros coach Brian O'Reilly. "We don't play too many freshmen, but he was just that special."
Dattilo has fulfilled those expectations in a big way.
The senior midfielder earned co-New Hampshire Division 1 Offensive Player of the Year honors this season after scoring 35 goals and a team-high 47 assists. Those bested his 2007 totals (36 goals, 24 assists) set a season ago when he was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star and All-Division 1.
"He has been an outstanding player for us for a long time," said O'Reilly. "He always drew the best player. As soon as he went towards the net, they drove players at him, and that's why he had so many assists."
During his career, the Astros won one Division 1 state championship and advanced to two more. He also gained the reputation as the state's best face-off man, with an 82 percent success rate this spring that O'Reilly called "unheard-of."
At just 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, Dattilo was also a standout running back for the Pinkerton football team that has won three straight Division 1 championships. In the 2007 championship game, he turned in a highlight-reel 28-yard touchdown catch.
Dattilo, who recently played in a national All-Star game, will continue his lacrosse career at Division 1 Hobart. The Statesmen won 16 national championships (13 Division 2, three Division 2) before moving to Division 1 in 1995.
"Bobby will have a great career in college," said O'Reilly. "He's not very fast or so quick, but he is athletic and he is just relentless. He never gives up."
